"As an architect with a young family, building this home was an opportunity to see how far we could go on a modest budget to create an extremely energy efficient and thermally comfortable home. Having lived in cold weatherboard homes in Central Victoria most of my life, we were about to create for ourselves the single greatest luxury we could imagine. Warmth."

What kind of future do we want to live in?
Its time to really ask ourselves this question. We may feel powerless to influence the way that we want our neighbourhoods and our homes to be. We may feel like we don't have any options other than what are being presented to us by large developer-led housing models.
But what if we could dream about what our world could be like, where we thought beyond the 6 foot colorbond fence on our property boundary and treated our streets and neighbourhoods as a living thriving eco-system, that could benefit everyone.
If Planning and Building regs weren't an issue, what would you like to see?

Our church to home conversion is almost complete! There's probably not too many old weatherboard churches around that can say they have had a passive solar addition. Together with new double-glazed windows and pro clima wall wraps and new insulation installed in the old building, this now cohesive home will be much better sealed up and protected against the Ballarat winters.

Some details of the north facade of our off-grid Ballarat home. Need to come up with a name for it!
Full professional photo set in the works.
Maybe controversial with this one, but it has LPG for stovetop cooking and hot water back-up, and a wood heater as a back-up/ alternate heating option. I know anything other than an all-electric home is blasphemy these days but if we put all our eggs into the one basket and there is a tech failure with the solar system, then you cannot even flush the toilet or cook anything. Having multiple fuel options on a very low energy usuage home just seems to be worth considering. Not all technology of the past needs to be discarded if it makes sense for your particular circumstance.

You will notice that the roof ridge is not something you normally see on a dwelling. This is a continuous ventilated roof ridge, more commonly seen on commercial sheds. Paired with ventilation openings hidden under the eaves, fresh is continuously drawn into the roof space and exhausted through the ridge.
Why do we do this? Firstly a roof space collects a lot of heat as metal roofing has a high thermal conductivity. In this case the insulation is placed at ceiling level because the roof volume does not need to be conditioned. Venting the heat out of the roof will considerably assist with keeping the inside of the home cool during the warmer months.
Secondly, I think by now most people are aware of the vast amount of water vapour produced inside a home on a daily basis. Cooking, showering, drying clothes, exhaling. If not mitigated, this vapour condenses onto cold surfaces like glass and thermal bridges, and invisible mould and rot inside your timber frame can occur. The ventilated roof space deals at least with the moisture that ends up rising into the roof.
Pictured here the west facade, where the large overhang provides shade from the Summer afternoon sun.

We're in the latest copy of Sanctuary Magazine! We've never tried to be the type of architectural practice striving for peer recognition or media attention. We just quietly work away at producing the most functional, practical and appropriate homes we can for our clients, to fit with their often modest budgets.

Its not easy to compete for visual attention on digital platforms where its all about the look. A home that is warm in Winter, cool in Summer, and has very low energy bills is hard to convey in the two seconds people spend looking at a photo.

So we are very grateful to have one of our humble SIPs homes featured in the prefab and and modular edition of the most prestigous sustainable design publication in Australia.
