Design focus: the element of direction

Paths are the perfect tool to incorporate the element of direction into design. Both functionally and visually, they draw the eye in the direction they lead, inviting you to explore the space and adding a contrasting hardscape into surrounding gardens.

This one is particularly striking as it converges on the pool and Luxe Cantilever alfresco area, creating an arrow-like garden full of spikey xerophyte planting alongside.

Xerophyte? That's just a fancy word for arid plants with low-water needs. What we think of when you say 'low maintenance!

Design focus:

When we're designing a backyard for children, there's extra details we put special care into for safety and practicality.

At this home in Dapto, access to the pool was via stairs with terraced gardens, creating potential for lots of sharp edges that could become dangerous with falls, so we added a radius to curve the edge off sharp corners.

We also anticipated that pool gate being flung around enthusiastically, so we added a little bump stop to the garden bed to catch it and soften the impact of any knocks.

It's one thing to make a garden beautiful, but it's another skill entirely, to anticipate how it will be used by kids and cater for those risk spots or cringe moments that get in the way of every day enjoyment of your yard.

Custom designed tap handles bringing a touch of bespoke luxury into our design.
It's attention to these little details that really elevate a project. It's why we pay close attention to high touch areas within a landscape design: from handles to hinges, these tiny moments interacting with your landscape design can either add friction or joy, depending on the care with which they're planned.

Working with a unique block shape provided inspiration to create unusual angles and architectural features within the space.

This design retained the right angles on the left side of the design, then worked with the wedge shape on the right to add a feature garden flanking the walk to the pool.

This week we wish a fond farewell to Dave of Pinnacle Pools as he heads off to get a well-deserved taste of retirement life.

We've had the pleasure of working with Dave for the past five years and he's been a huge part of building the beautiful projects we've worked on together.

We've built such a good relationship on site, both professionally and as mates, working in lock-step to deliver the quality that matters so much to us both. He is one of the most experienced concrete pool builders we've ever worked with, reliable and precise - in addition to just being an all-round good bloke.

Both Matt and I will miss working together and learning from the best. We'll miss the banter and the boost to our team morale - especially poking fun on those days you're a bit grumpy.

So here's a big thank you from Matt and I and the whole team at CFL. For the laughs, for the learning and the amazing pools you helped bring to life on our projects.

Huge congratulations to Pinnacle Pools on being awarded Best Concrete Pool up to $240k for our Dapto project at last weekend's 2026 SPASA NSW Awards of Excellence!

Our Dapto project took a lot of love, considered design and meticulous planning to pull off and we are beyond thrilled to see it recognised for its stunning design and impeccable ex*****on.

We played with contrasting the elements of shape and line to create this design for our Caringbah South project, pairing the straight vertical lines of the black and white fencing against the unexpected obtuse angle of the pool and a radial fan for the entry steps. ⁠

Now this looks like a whole new backyard! When the Corey Fox team started work here, this was an old red brick home. As part of the landscape design, they suggested freshening up the home facade to better connect with the beautiful new backyard they were designing.

Next thing, the facade facelift was part of the brief and the result is this gorgeously serene backyard! And there's a little hidden gem if you look closely...

See there at the back of the pool there's a little window down low? Swipe to see what's in there!

This was previously a dark and dingy little spot that is now bright and sheltered to share a meal overlooking the pool in the heat of summer or cosy up in winter.
