Did someone say Active House?? This is basically an evolution of a Passive House that goes one step further...!! Let's backtrack a little phew π³
~
Passive Solar Design and Passive House design, we are learning are two distinct, yet related, concepts in the field of sustainable building and energy efficiency π±
~
π€ What does passive solar design mean?
It is where the home uses natural energy flows (sun and wind) to maintain the most comfortable indoor environment possible for a building for the climate in which itβs located (Envirotecture, 2018).
The design considerations required to achieve a passive solar building are:
β’ Orientation
β’ Zoning
β’ Thermal mass
β’ Shading
β’ Insulation
β’ Ventilation
β’ Glazing
~
π€ What does Passive House or 'passivhaus' mean?
A Passive House takes a βfabric firstβ approach. The focus of the design is ensuring the thermal shell (the layer that separates inside from outside) is optimised to provide comfortable, healthy, indoor conditions (Marlow 2020).
Passive Houses have five key elements:
β’ Orientation
β’ Appropriate insulation
β’ Airtightness
β’ High performance windows
β’ Balanced ventilation with heat recovery
~
π€ Which one is best? Envirotecture (2018) state that both Passive Solar Design and Certified Passive House can deliver comfortable, affordable and enjoyable buildings in a range of climates, neither one is inherently better than the other. However, Passive House does have some strict criteria for performance whereas Passive Solar has only principles. The biggest single difference in a Passive House is the requirement for air tightness.
