From fabrication to installation at Punt Road Oval ⚡️🏗️🏉

A major piece of the steelwork package of the Richmond Football Club Punt Road Oval redevelopment for Built Environs has just been completed.

Structural Challenge fabricated this geometric steel stair structure for the new Jack Dyer Stand, with the large plated sections manufactured offsite in a one-piece module before being transported to Punt Road Oval for installation. The size and weight of the structure presented a complex shop detailing and fabrication process which our Project Manager co-ordinated so the section could be carefully lifted into position by crane and integrated into the developing building structure in a few hours.

From the workshop to the construction site, it’s rewarding to see a fabricated structure like this go from individual steel components to a finished architectural feature. We’re proud to be contributing to one of Richmond Football Club’s most significant infrastructure projects, working alongside Built Environs and the broader project team to bring the new Punt Road Oval precinct to life.

After more than 56 years in the steel fabrication industry, it's time to congratulate Merrill De Gee on an incredible career as he heads into retirement 👏🏗️

As our Production Manager, Merrill brought a wealth of valuable knowledge and experience to Structural Challenge. For over a decade, he’s supported the business as it’s grown, working with commitment to mentor apprentices, develop welding procedures, and lead production teams to uphold the highest standards of quality workmanship. His impact has been felt across countless projects, and by everyone lucky enough to work alongside him.

Known just as much for his playfulness and sense of humour as his expertise, Merrill has been a valued mentor, teammate and friend. His willingness to share his knowledge, have a laugh, and keep everyone on their toes has made him a true favourite around Structural Challenge.

Merrill, thank you for your dedication, leadership and the legacy you've built over an extraordinary career. We’ll really miss you, but wish you all the very best for a well-earned retirement—enjoy every minute, you've certainly earned it 🏆✨

Real-world structural thinking in the classroom 👷‍♀️🏗️

Last week, our Managing Director Maria Mavrikos visited Keysborough College to speak with students about careers in steel construction and manufacturing, sharing insights from her journey in industry and the many pathways available beyond traditional expectations.

Students then put their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills to the test in a hands-on building challenge using spaghetti and marshmallows, with plenty of creative ideas, and impressive engineering attempts across the room.

Thank you to Keysborough College for having us—we’re always passionate about helping young people connect with real industry opportunities, and showing the next generation the wide range of careers that help shape our built environment 👏 ✨

We’re proud to share that our Founder and CEO, Maria Mavrikos, was engaged as a keynote speaker at the 2026 Empowering Women Entrepreneurs (EWE) Program Launch on 6 May.

Centred around the theme ‘The Power of Collective Momentum’, the event highlighted the impact of mentorship, peer support, and community in helping women in business grow and succeed. Maria shared her experience building Steel Chicks, the importance of creating opportunities for women in industry, and the value of strong networks that empower women to back each other and move forward together. The evening brought together established business leaders, emerging entrepreneurs, and community partners for meaningful conversations, networking, and the launch of the 2026 EWE Program.

The program will run from June to August, supporting 15 women who are looking to launch or scale their business, offering mentoring, workshops, and dedicated networking opportunities at a significantly discounted cost. You can read more and apply for the program here: https://www.eibc.net.au/empowering-women-entrepreneurs-program

We were honoured to welcome Senator Jane Hume to Structural Challenge last month.

As Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Productivity and Deregulation, Senator Hume met with our team to discuss the proposed Safeguard Measure and its critical role in protecting Australia’s steel industry and strengthening our sovereign manufacturing capability.

A resilient local steel sector is essential to jobs, infrastructure delivery and national security. We appreciate the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation about the future of Australian manufacturing.
