GIDGEGANNUP REVISIT

We revisited this awesome big boulder pond back in late April for its first annual wetland filter backwash.

It’s looking fantastic and the water is so, so clear 💦💦💦

This is the one where we needed to get a crane in to lift and place about half a dozen of the big boulders. One of the boulders in the waterfall weighed in at 7.2 tons!!! HUGE 🪨

The filter was a bit dirty as you’d expect for an exposed pond like this after twelve months, but that is exactly their purpose. And the serviceability of an Aquascape upflow constructed wetland filter is one of its best traits.

The system of a vertical ‘snorkel’ and horizontal dispersal ‘centipedes’ are the real keys to this serviceability. Enabling us to backwash built up sediment from the graded stone/gravel filter media and very easily pump out remove it from the wetland filter and pond system in a very water efficient way.

KOI POND UPGRADE

We recently completed a serious filtration upgrade of the Koi Pond in the Japanese Garden at the Perth Zoo

It was great to introduce the Aquascape ecosystem approach to ponds to the Perth Zoo. We have added a compact upflow wetland filter using the new Aquascape Filterblox wetland technology. These introduce a massive 400% increase in surface area for beneficial bacteria vs the more traditional layered-gravel upflow wetland filter.

We’ve also added a skimmer to the main pond to house the low voltage pump to skim the pond surface to keep it clear of debris and dramatically reduce the amount of materials like leaves that become waterlogged and sink to the floor of the pond creating a food source for algae.

And we’ve added more water plants and river pebbles to the main pond to create habitat for the Koi to fulfill their natural desires and benthivorous feeding habits rooting through the pond substrate.

It’s our first project at Perth Zoo and hopefully there will be more to come in the future creating more naturalistic ecosystem-style freshwater habitats which come with reduced maintenance as a huge side benefit. Working with Mother Nature instead of against her, utilizing pond systems and processes that mimic nature.

We love creating habitat ponds catering to animals natural desires and surroundings. Whether that’s for fish or for other waterborne creatures, or even for land dwelling animals that LOVE a swim 🏊‍♂️ 🏊‍♀️

SWIMMING POND REVISIT

It was great to drop in here for a quick visit a few days ago.

I was dropping in to show the timber & aviary mesh fence to an upcoming client, but simply couldn’t resist taking a few photos of the swimming pond while I was there 📸

It is looking absolutely SPECTACULAR

HELENA VALLEY POND RENOVATION

It was handover meeting on the weekend for this recently completed pond renovation.

It started as a bare liner pond and we’ve stripped it out, upgraded and completely rebuilt it!

It now has energy efficient 12 volt pumps located in a skimmer box to keep the surface clear of debris.

It has an Aquascape upflow wetland filter spilling back into the pond for the lovely sight and sound, and to ensure ongoing very high water quality.

It has low voltage underwater LED lights to provide great evening ambience.

And it has also been fitted out internally with natural limestone block wall, stone cladding through the waterline and it even has a slate crazy paving floor with central air bubbler for high volume bottom-to-top circulation.

It’s a massive change from just a month ago!!

NANNUP SWIMMING POND

We love seeing photos of this swimming pond often shared by its lovely and lively owners.

It’s also hosted many open days and even swims to many well known guests and presenters in town for the Nannup Flower & Garden Festival over the years including Paul from River Cottage Australia and Costa from Gardening Australia.

This was our third ever swimming pond and was completed in mid 2020 after Covid regional closures reopened travel to Southwest WA.

What we love most of all is that it’s still looking spectacular six years on 💚💦🐠

GOOSEBERRY HILL ECO POND

I think this is my new favorite small ecosystem pond that we’ve ever built!

Though we’ve built many I love, there’s just so many lovely things about this one.

Love the pond depth and clarity, love the babbling brook waterfall, love the planted surrounds, love the repurposed antique manual water pump (actually from this homestead property!) and really love the low stone-clad wall setting the scene and providing a great place to sit or stand right alongside the pond.

Thanks Mike, Toby & Oskar. You have done an incredible job bringing this one to life and taking it far beyond what I even designed and imagined.

And the owner loves it even more than I do !!

I was back for a visit to this hybrid swimming pond today and how good does it look?!?

The best I’ve ever seen it. So clear!

What i really love here though is the absolutely stunning garden surrounding it. The owner is so passionate about her garden and it’s filled with so much variety and interest. 💚💚💚🌱🌱🌱

WEMBLEY SWIMPOND REVISIT

We were back at our Wembley swimming pond project this week for its annual wetland filter backwash service.

It’s looking awesome and is sitting so well in the beautiful contemporary gardens surrounding it which were designed by Jem Hanbury Studio and expertly installed by alessios_gardens 👏👏👏

HELENA VALLEY PROGRESS

The guys have been been working so hard on this pond update project in Helena Valley. It’s been tricky in so many ways with most of the structure being quite different to the way we usually build ponds.

We’re nearly three weeks into it and still haven’t placed a ROCK yet! 🪨 🪨 🪨

Lots of limestone block work, lots of tricky liner folds, connections and overlaps, a cool crazy paving slate floor and most recently installing stone cladding to the upper section in the last couple of days.

The wetland filter is the usual upflow Aquascape ecosystem wetland installed this week, and the guys will likely place the first rock there on Monday!
