What does Milan know about beautiful homes that we often overlook in Australia? šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹āœØ

After visiting Salone del Mobile in Milan, I came home thinking less about trends and more about the way we design our homes.
The biggest lessons weren’t about a particular colour, piece of furniture or ā€œmust-haveā€ finish.
They were about restraint. Texture. Beautifully considered joinery. Lighting that becomes part of the architecture. Kitchens that feel like living spaces. Bathrooms that feel like retreats.
And perhaps most importantly, designing for longevity rather than the latest trend.
Of course, not everything I saw in Milan belongs in an Australian home, particularly here in the tropics.
The real skill is taking those world-class design principles and interpreting them for our climate, our lifestyle and the way we actually live.
I’ve shared my biggest takeaways from Milan - and what I believe Australian homeowners can learn from them - in my latest journal article.

šŸ‘‹ You’ve saved over a thousand Pinterest images… so why does choosing one tap suddenly feel impossible?🧐

🤯 Design Crime According to Me: Using Pinterest without a strategy.

Pinterest is one of the best design tools available.
It’s also one of the biggest causes of decision paralysis.
I meet clients with hundreds of beautiful saved images, and every one of them has something worth loving.
The challenge isn’t having too little inspiration.
It’s having so much that every decision becomes harder than the last.
Here’s a simple exercise.

The next time you save an image, don’t ask yourself, ā€œDo I like this?ā€
Ask yourself, ā€œWhat exactly am I responding to?ā€

The stone?
The warmth of the timber?
The natural light?
The proportions?
The feeling?

When you understand why you’re saving an image, you’ll start to see recurring themes.
Those themes become your design brief. That’s when Pinterest stops overwhelming you and starts working for you.
✨JMJ Design Principle No. 1
Clarity comes from curation, not collection✨

šŸ  The biggest mistake people make after buying their dream home is thinking they need to start choosing furniture.

They don’t.

They need to start by understanding how they want to live.

A new home is full of possibility, but it can also feel overwhelming.

The instinct is often to start filling rooms or making quick decisions. In reality, the first step has nothing to do with furniture, colours or finishes.

Before I draw a single line, I need to understand the people who will live there.
How do they entertain?
Where do they naturally gather?
Do they love slow Sunday mornings with coffee by the pool, or is the house always full of family and friends?
What frustrates them about the way they live now?

Those conversations become the foundation for every design decision that follows.
A beautiful home isn’t created by selecting beautiful things.
It’s created by designing spaces that support the way you actually live.

That’s where every JMJ project begins✨

šŸ’” One question I ask every client before we design the lighting ā€œWhere do you actually need light?

šŸ’” Have you ever noticed that some homes feel calm, luxurious and inviting, while others feel bright but strangely flat?
šŸ’”The difference is rarely the number of downlights.

It’s the layers.

Every room should have light that serves a purpose. A lamp beside a favourite chair. Soft illumination inside joinery. Artwork brought to life. A dining table that feels intimate. Gentle light washing across a textured wall.
Tonight, try a simple experiment.

Turn every downlight off.

Now ask yourself, where do I actually need light?
You may discover your room isn’t asking for another electrician.
It’s asking for another layer.
That’s today’s Design Crime According to Me.
Do you prefer a home that feels bright, or one that feels beautiful?

ā€œThe size of your rug determines whether your living room feels considered… or compromised.ā€

It’s a simple principle that makes a remarkable difference…A rug should do more than sit under a coffee table.

It should define the living zone, connect the furniture, and bring proportion to the room.

Choosing the right size is one of the simplest ways to make a space feel more generous, more resolved, and undeniably more luxurious.

It’s a small decision that has a remarkable impactšŸ’„

This kitchen has been named a KBDi National Finalist for 2026.

I’m incredibly proud of the recognition.

What matters even more is what this space represents.

Every project begins long before the finishes are selected.

It begins with understanding how a family lives, how they move through their home, where they gather, where the frustrations lie, and what they never want to compromise on again.

Beautiful kitchens are designed every day.

Kitchens that quietly improve the way you live require something more.

That is the difference thoughtful interior architecture makes.

If you’re planning a renovation and want a home designed around your life, rather than a catalogue of products, I’d love to help.

Bookings for new projects are now open.

Hey šŸ‘‹ If your kitchen was designed around the kitchen triangle… it may already be outdated.

šŸ’„We’ve been told for decades that every great kitchen starts with the kitchen triangle.

✨It was a smart idea. In 1940.

šŸ’„Today’s kitchens work differently. They’re shared spaces where people cook together, unpack groceries, make coffee, supervise homework, entertain and live.

šŸ¤øšŸ»That’s why I design kitchens around activity zones, not a triangle.

šŸ°Food storage.
šŸ“ Preparation.
šŸ§‘ā€šŸ³ Cooking.
🧼 Cleaning.
šŸ½ļø Serving.
šŸ‘šŸ‘When each task has its own logical place, the kitchen flows naturally and works with your daily routine instead of against it.
šŸ’„Design principles evolve because the way we live evolves.

šŸ¤”Have you ever heard of activity zoning before?
