UNSAFE OR DANGEROUS GAS APPLIANCE
Swift 500 Series Gas Cooktop
Hopefully out Queensland Department follows WA and issues a formal ruling to all Gas Fitters here in Queensland.
Here is the latest information as of Monday 13/6/22 regarding the Swift 500 Series Cooktop
Building and Energy has become aware of a serious safety issue involving Swift
Caravan Cookers - 500 series with AGA certification number AGA 6488G in
Western Australia.
Examination carried out by Building and Energy on samples of the Swift Caravan
Cookers - 500 series gas cookers that incorporate aluminum tubing and
compression fittings, within the cooker, revealed that a circumference fracture of the aluminium tube at the flare compression fitting on the front left burner existed. Additionally, a worn-out location was also observed on the opposite side
of the respective tube. This could result in a gas leak and subsequent explosion
Building and Energy became aware of this issue following two incidents involving
Swift Caravan Cookers, in which the appliances exploded, resulting in serious
injury to users:
Incident 1 occurred in July 2021: Model number 503BHSP date of
manufacture 2019; and
Incident 2 occurred in April 2022: Model number 502BHSP date of
manufacture 2019.
As a result of the examination conducted by Building and Energy, the Director of
Energy Safety has formed the opinion that the Swift Caravan Cookers - 500 Series are likely to become unsafe when in use.
I hereby attach a Notice issued by the Director under s.13H of the Gas
Standards Act 1972, prohibiting the sale, hire or use of the Swift Caravan Cookers - 500 Series.
We have been instructed by the Department of Mines in Western Australia that ALL Swift
Cookers produced and supplied since 2004 are NOT to be SOLD, HIRED OR USED in
Western Australia due to a problem that has been identified with a certain nut in the gas
supply pipe and that may have been overtightened leading to a possible leakage.
This issue could cause gas to leak, ignite other than as intended in normal use and cause an explosion or fire that may cause serious injury or even death to the user.
We are actively investigating this further, and we are communicating with the relevant
Authorities so as to further understand, manage and resolve the problem.
At present any cookers that are in Western Australia CANNOT be sold. hired or be used
and vou must notify ALL Dealers and customers of this matter.
