SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

The is a Michaud 100-ampere fuse holder. It’s only found at the point-of-attachment (POA) where your supply line attaches to your home or business.

We’ve detected that the shear bolts (circled) on some of these devices are not properly insulated, and therefore conduct electricity. That could pose a shock hazard to someone who comes in contact (usually an electrical professional, at your POA).

The defect appears isolated to a specific batch of about 2,000 devices, installed over the past 18 months. The supplier is responsible for recall and replacement, and we’re working with them and the regulator to organise that promptly.

In the meantime:

• Please do nothing. The device poses no risk if left alone, and left in place;
• Don’t inspect or check your POA, or engage an electrical contractor to do so;
• Your home is safe. Your electricity supply isn’t affected;
• It’s safe to use your fuse box as normal. The device is not in there (only at your POA);
• Only electrical professionals should be accessing your POA anyway (usually by ladder). But we’re conscious that many people access that area by ladder for gutter clearing, roof painting, etc. Please be mindful and stay at least one metre from your POA;
• TasNetworks has initiated interim hazard alerts, safety directives and control measures to protect employees and contractors.

Your safety is our priority. Once batch-tracing’s completed, the customers at affected addresses will be notified. The replacement program should run seamlessly, with little or no inconvenience to customers.

Thanks for your co-operation. If you have specific concerns, please call TasNetworks on 132 004. There’s more information here:https://www.tasnetworks.com.au/config/getattachment/e92375a2-3eb9-465f-b02a-4fc83d395d22/Defect-Solution-in-Progress.pdf

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING – WEDNESDAY NIGHT TO FRIDAY MORNING

The Bureau of Meteorology’s warning of extremely heavy rain and strong winds across northern Tasmania (as well as parts of the east and south-east coast) from Wednesday night to Friday morning.

24-hour rainfall totals of up to 120 millimetres are forecast, which could cause dangerous flash flooding. That’s the heaviest rainfall in northern Tasmania since 2016, when the Cataract Gorge and local rivers flooded. Wind gusts up to 95 km/h are also possible in some areas.

Please stay at least 10 metres clear of fallen power-lines or equipment, and report any damage to TasNetworks on 132004.

We’ll try to fix any outages as quickly as possible. It’s useful to charge your mobile phone, to keep internet access in case you lose power.

We appreciate your support in looking after our community.

STORM DAMAGE AND OUTAGES UPDATE – 11.30AM

There are about 1,900 customers without power:
https://www.tasnetworks.com.au/outages

We were able to restore several hundred customers yesterday, and expect similar numbers today (Wednesday).

It’s clear from the widespread damage our crews and contractors are seeing in the field that some customers will remain without power for a few days to come. We’ll again contact them by SMS today.

We’ve got everyone possible in the field and are starting to access some of the more hazardous and inaccessible areas. Heavy rain’s increasing the hazard by making trees unstable. We’re working as quickly as we can to restore power, but must always put safety first.

The Tasmanian community has been overwhelmingly supportive while we work to restore people’s power. We thank everyone for their patience while this gruelling work continues.

Please stay at least 10 metres clear of fallen lines or other damage. Please report any undetected damage to us on 132 004.

Please monitor TasNetworks’ Facebook and website for the latest updates.

You can monitor known outages here: https://www.tasnetworks.com.au/outages
(and request SMS updates on any specific outage).
