Australia produces significant volumes of rice each year, and with every harvest comes a byproduct that most operations treat as a problem, rice hulls. They are bulky, low density, and awkward to handle or dispose of. But they are also a proven biomass fuel, and with the right briquetting system they become something worth selling.
Rice hulls have good flowability and naturally lower moisture content compared to many other agricultural residues, which makes them well suited to the briquetting process. When compressed under high pressure using a mechanical briquette press the kind C.F. Nielsen has been manufacturing since 1889 β the hull material is densified into a hard, uniform briquette with real calorific value. No binders. No additives. Just pressure and the material itself.
The result is a clean-burning biomass fuel that can be used for industrial heating, dryer fuel, or sold into energy markets. Agricultural waste that was previously a disposal cost becomes a product with a commercial return.
Agricultural waste has a low heating value per unit volume. By densifying the raw material through the briquetting process, it turns into a high density and energy concentrated fuel making briquettes a profitable and durable source of energy for various purposes.
