Bit of a rough one this week in the Dandenong Ranges. A power surge ended up frying the home’s very old cotton-wrapped consumer mains, which meant the property lost power and the supply cables were no longer safe to use.

The silver lining was that since the meter panel needed replacing anyway, we were able to upgrade the whole setup and convert the house over to 3 phase power at the same time. That gives the home plenty more capacity for things like induction cooktops, EV chargers, workshops, or larger air conditioning systems down the track.

A lot of homes around the Dandenong Ranges still have these older cotton-insulated consumer mains, and when they fail it can happen pretty suddenly like this.

If you’re in the Dandenong Ranges and your place still has older electrical infrastructure, it might be worth getting it checked before it becomes a bigger issue.

In this video, we complete the electrical fit-off stage of a new apartment fitout, installing power points and finalising the switchboard with RCBO protection for safe and compliant operation.

The fit-off stage is where an electrical installation comes together — outlets, switches, and protection devices are installed, tested, and prepared for handover. RCBOs provide combined overload and safety switch protection, helping protect both circuits and occupants from electrical faults.

Emergency Electrician Call Out | Tree Damage Took Out Power Connection | Loss of Power to Home

In this video, we attend an emergency electrical call out after a property completely lost power when a tree damaged the overhead electrical connection and point of attachment to the home.

The issue was not an internal electrical fault but external damage to the consumer mains connection, which meant the property could no longer safely receive power from the street supply. Situations like this require immediate assessment by a licenced electrician to make the installation safe and organise repairs before power can be restored.
