Jane Cameron Architects We specialise in renovating and restoring period homes, whilst creating modern extensions, in Melbourne's inner-city.

Skylights are a simple way of bringing natural light deeper into a home, particularly in renovations where windows to the side may not be possible.

We use them in different ways depending on the space, sometimes to bring light down a wall, over joinery or into the centre of a plan. They can also change the quality of a room throughout the day as the light moves.

This Fitzroy project is a retrofit and extension which has now achieved certification to the Passivhaus Classic Plus Standard.

This project is located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present.

Originally designed by Guilford Bell and Neil Clerehan in 1963, with landscaping by Gordon Ford, the Beddison Swift project comprised two separate dwellings on a single site.

Our renovation brought the two dwellings together to create one home, while making as few changes as possible to the original architecture.

One of the key interventions was a new opening between the two dwellings, with steps and a sliding door creating a connection between them. The changes were deliberately subtle, respecting the character and architectural integrity of the original design.

Kitchens need to respond to the house they are part of.

Across these projects, the approach varies from heritage renovations to Mid-Century homes and a Passivhaus retrofit and extension. Materials, joinery, natural light and the relationship to adjoining spaces are considered specifically for each home.

The kitchens are quite different in character, but each is designed to be practical, well resolved and comfortable within the architecture of the house.

In this East Melbourne Victorian terrace, we wanted the kitchen to feel contemporary without being disconnected from the character of the original house.

The curved island helps soften the kitchen within the space, while the warm grey joinery, marble and oak herringbone flooring create a restrained material palette. The casual seating at the end of the island makes it a place for everyday use as much as cooking.

A contemporary kitchen designed as part of a broader renovation and extension to the Victorian home.

Our Fitzroy retrofit is now certified to the Passivhaus Classic Plus standard.

One of the clearest lessons from the project is that successful retrofit starts before the design does.

From early contractor involvement to reusing bricks from the original house, the project has shaped how we are approaching our next Passivhaus retrofits.

Looking in from the lightwell, arched steel-framed French doors frame the view into the East Melbourne kitchen.

Outside, crazy paving is softened by low-growing Dichondra, allowing the planting to spread between the stone and soften the edges of the lightwell. Together, the glazing, paving and planting bring natural light, greenery and texture into the centre of the home.

Located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, this project honours their enduring connection to Country.

Working with heritage homes is often about doing less rather than more.

We start by looking at what is already there and what gives the house its character. Sometimes the best approach is simply to retain, repair and work around those elements, rather than replacing them.

Across our renovations, from Victorian and Edwardian terraces to Californian Bungalows, Inter-war and Mid-Century homes, the response is different each time. The aim is to respect the original architecture while making the changes needed for the house to work well today.

This is the joinery detailing to the living room, photographed at handover stage, right before our client moved in and made it home.

The feature wall is brick recycled from the deconstruction of the project, so the material already has a history rather than being brand new. It's paired with oak joinery and oak engineered flooring, finished to the standard you want walking into a home for the first time.
