Push button lock not popping out anymore?

A lot of people think the lock is broken straight away, but sometimes it is actually just in the wrong setting.

On some push button knobsets and leversets, the inside button can be pushed in and turned. When that happens, it may stay in and the outside can remain locked every time the door closes.

From inside, everything can still feel normal, which is why this catches people out so easily.

That is also how people end up accidentally locking themselves out.

I put together a simple blog explaining what is usually happening, the difference between normal entrance function and storeroom-style behaviour, and the first thing to check before assuming the lock needs replacing.

Sliding door lock not locking when open? It might not be broken.

Some sliding door locks are designed not to lock unless the door is fully closed. This prevents the lock from slamming into the frame and getting damaged.

You can check it yourself:
Look for the small spring-loaded pin on the edge of the sliding door lock.
Push it in with your finger — the lock should then lock and unlock normally.

Also, if your sliding door lock feels hard to turn, try a small amount of INOX.
If it still doesn’t operate smoothly, it may be time to call a locksmith.

Simple issue, but one that causes a lot of confusion 👍

Quick reminder 🔑

If you’ve just moved into a new home, it’s a good idea to rekey the locks.

You never really know how many keys are still out there — previous owners, tenants, trades, cleaners… sometimes quite a few.

Rekeying means the old keys will no longer work, while keeping your existing locks (if they’re in good condition).

Simple job, but gives you peace of mind.

Most people plan to get a spare “soon”… but I promise you, the day you lose it will be the busiest, worst-timed day possible 😅

If you’ve still got one working key, getting a spare made now is much cheaper than an all-keys-lost job.
