Steep sites come with a very particular set of challenges, and I'll be upfront, they're never as simple as a flat block. The first issue is design and overlooking. On a sloping block, especially if you're building double storey or split level, height gets magnified quickly. In an established area like Highton, where most of the surrounding homes are already finished, dropping an eight metre tall structure onto one remaining block can easily mean you're looking straight into someone's backyard. Solving that at the design stage takes real thought.

The second challenge is structural. Steep site cuts can cause genuine problems. A three metre or two and a half metre site cut right next to a neighbouring property can undermine footings if it's not handled carefully, and issues like that have a habit of compounding.

This is why the pre-construction stage matters so much on a sloping block. We work through every likely scenario before the build starts, so we're not opening ourselves or our clients up to bigger problems, or bigger costs, later on. The retaining structures and the site cut itself are usually the hardest part of the whole project. Once that stage is done properly, everything after tends to move a lot more smoothly.

Steep sites will always be more challenging than a flat block, but with the right planning they don't have to be more stressful. It's just a different kind of building, and it's one we know well.

Geelong is a genuinely interesting place to design homes. There's a strong sense of heritage across the region, and at the same time we're a coastal town with some stunning beach fronts. Add to that the amount of modern design and modern construction happening here right now, and you've got a lot of different influences sitting side by side.

When we're designing a new home, we try to take all of that in. We look at the heritage character of the older streets, the relaxed feel that comes from being close to the coast, and the clean lines you see in a lot of the newer builds around Geelong. Rather than picking one and ignoring the rest, we take inspiration from each aspect and work it into the design.

That's part of what makes building here so enjoyable. No two projects end up looking the same, because no two clients are drawing on exactly the same mix of influences. Some lean more coastal, some lean more heritage, and some are firmly modern. Our job as a custom home builder is to read what's inspiring our clients and translate it into a home that actually works for their block and their budget.

It's also why we don't believe in a one size fits all approach. Geelong has too much character for that, and our clients deserve a home that reflects it.

Navigating the Home Building Process: From Planning to Reality in Geelong

When embarking on the exciting journey of building a new home, many people envision themselves walking the construction site, watching their dream house take shape. However, what surprises most is that a significant chunk of time is spent in the administrative phases before the first brick is laid.....

When a new client sits down with us for the first time, I don't come in with a fixed idea of what their home should look like. The first questions are always the same: what's the vision here, and what are we trying to achieve?

From there, we listen. Sometimes a client will say they want a mid century minimalist home, sometimes it's not fixed at all and we build the picture together as we talk. I'm not interested in locking someone into a label before we've even discussed how they want to live. Instead, we pick up on the ideas that come through in conversation and let the design flow from there.

Interestingly, it usually still lands somewhere recognisable in the end. Around Highton, where a lot of our current work is happening, you'll see plenty of modern homes with touches from a few different styles blended together. That's not an accident. It's what happens when the design responds to the client rather than the other way around.

This is one of the reasons we describe ourselves as a custom home builder rather than a project home builder. Every home starts as a conversation, not a template. It takes longer than picking a plan off a shelf, but the result actually reflects the people who are going to live there.
