Yep, this is what pipes look like when you put cooking oils down the sink 🤢

Fats, oils and grease should never go down the drain. When they hit the cool water in your wastewater pipes, they harden.

They then combine with other waste like wet wipes to form hard blockages known as 'fatbergs'.

These blockages can cause overflows which can be a health and environmental nightmare, with wastewater backing up and overflowing into homes, backyards and local waterways.

What’s more, you could be looking at an expensive plumbing bill to fix a blocked drain.

To avoid this happening to your pipes:
♻️ Scrape food leftovers into the bin or compost.
🧻 Wipe greasy pans and dishes with a paper towel before washing up.
🗑 Pour used oil or fatty liquids (like old milk) into a container and put it in the bin.
🚰 Use a sink strainer to catch small pieces of food.

❄️ Please be mindful with the extremely cold weather predicted for tonight and tomorrow morning, there is a very high possibility of frozen water meters and pipes in the morning 😭

Some precautions you can take:

❄️ Cover your water meter and pipes with a towel or a thick rag.

❄️ Fill a bucket with water tonight and keep it indoors so if your meter is frozen in the morning you can pour the room temperature water over the meter and pipes to assist with defrosting.

Reminder:

🛠 Council can't do anything about frozen meters or pipes, we have to wait for them to defrost.

🙅🏻‍♀️ Please do not pour boiling water on the meter or pipes as this may cause the pipe to split.

Be careful what you flush!

With toilet paper currently in short supply, you might be finding yourself temporarily having to rely on alternatives but whatever you do, don't flush them down the toilet!

Dubbo Regional Council is urging people to avoid using paper towels or napkins that can cause costly blockages in residential sewer pipes and Council sewer mains. Unlike toilet paper, paper towels and napkins are not designed to break down in water. Flushing them can result in blockages and expensive home plumbing problems.
