“Yeah mate, we used screws on your fence posts…” 🚩

There’s a BIG difference between the fixings used for rails and the fixings used to secure posts to retaining wall shark fins — and using the wrong one can compromise the strength and safety of your fence.

🔩 Batten screws
Designed for fixing rails and palings. They’re a quality product when used for the RIGHT purpose.

🛠️ Cup head bolts
Designed to secure fence posts to shark fins on retaining walls. They provide the strength, stability and structural integrity needed to keep your fence secure long term.

The problem?
Some contractors cut corners by using batten screws where bolts should be used because it’s faster and cheaper.

But faster doesn’t mean better.
And cheaper can end up costing more later.

At Ashley’s, we use the correct products for the correct application — because safety, durability and quality workmanship matter.

Take a close look at your fence.
Has your fencer used the right fixings?

Ever noticed a small gap beside a gate or near the house wall on some of our fences? It’s completely intentional 👇
We sometimes leave a small clearance and trim the paling/spiking near the wall to avoid covering the termite inspection zone (also known as the termite line). 🐜
This area needs to remain visible and accessible for termite inspections and treatments. Covering it can make termite activity harder to detect and may interfere with existing termite barriers.
By leaving this gap, we help:
✔ Maintain inspection access
✔ Protect termite management systems
✔ Follow best building and pest management practices
✔ Help prevent hidden and costly termite damage
At the end of the day, every part of our installs is done with long-term protection, function, and quality in mind, not just appearance. 🛠️

Come with us to prepare for a retaining wall.
This site wasn’t exactly what we expected when we turned up, but we persevered.

We cleared the area, removing the excess spoil, marking the holes before we began digging.
What you don’t see is the concreting of the holes. All hands on deck getting this one in! Stay tuned for the finished pictures
