Team Toy Story: Team Building That Gives Back to Children’s Charities

The Sabre team had the privilege of working with another great client this week, combining team building with a meaningful community outcome through our Team Toy Story charity event.

The 100-strong conference group was divided into small teams before leaving their Mooloolaba meeting venue to take part in a specially tailored Quest through the surrounding beaches, parks and wharf precinct.

Along the way, teams tackled a wide variety of fun, challenging and sometimes unexpected tasks, earning points through teamwork, creativity, problem-solving and good old-fashioned competitive spirit.

But there was a twist.

At the conclusion of the competitive phase, the points earned by each team were converted into spending power. A large pop-up toy store was then unveiled, with tables laden with thousands of dollars’ worth of toys suitable for different ages, interests and needs.

Teams opened their special packs to discover large shopping bags and details of the children’s charities they had been allocated. They learned a little about the work each organisation performs and the people they support before setting about choosing the most appropriate toys for their particular charity.
Suddenly, all those points earned during the team challenge had a very real purpose.

By the end of the event, the shopping bags were overflowing with toys ready to be delivered to organisations including The Salvation Army and Dreams in a Suitcase, helping bring a little happiness to children and families experiencing difficult circumstances.

Team Toy Story is a great example of how team building can go beyond simply providing an enjoyable conference activity. Participants still experience the fun, competition, collaboration and shared memories of a traditional team event, but the experience also leaves behind something tangible and worthwhile.

It’s a wonderful way for organisations to combine team building with corporate social responsibility and leave a lasting legacy from a meeting, conference or corporate event, while helping people in the wider community who genuinely need it.

Every year, we have the opportunity to work with a cohort of 50 emerging leaders selected from across the Information Technology sector as part of a respected industry-wide leadership development programme.

For more than six years, each new cohort has participated in Belbin workshops before undertaking a tailored team challenge that enables them to donate Backpack Beds and care packs to people experiencing homelessness.

Their ongoing support for this long-standing charity partner of ours reflects the value their faculty and core leadership programme place on genuine, character-based leadership and giving back to the community. It is always a pleasure to work with clients who genuinely practise what they preach.

Our Street Survivors challenge enables clients to combine meaningful team building and development with a practical contribution to frontline homelessness charities, creating a lasting legacy from their meeting or leadership programme.
With homelessness sadly becoming a bigger and more complex issue, this is a great options for any client seeking to give back.

Team building doesn’t need a cast of hundreds.

In fact, some of the most valuable team development happens within smaller intact teams, leadership groups and executive teams, where every individual contribution matters and team dynamics and working relationships are easier to see.

Sabre designs tailored small group team building, executive team development, corporate offsites and mini-retreats for teams typically ranging from around 6–20 people.

Sessions can range from serious fun and reconnection through to more structured team development using facilitated experiential learning, strategic simulations and Belbin Team Role profiling.

Whether your team needs to refresh relationships, reconnect after change, improve communication, align a leadership group or simply get away from business-as-usual for a few hours, we can tailor the level of activity and learning to suit.

We can work with groups in the 100’s and 1000’s as well when the opportunity arises.

Cost-Effective Team Building: How to Get More Value from a Smaller Corporate Event.

Corporate events and team building are changing.

Across Australia, many organisations are becoming more selective about where they spend money, how much time they take people away from work, and what they expect an event to actually achieve.

It often means doing smarter team building and events.

Instead of automatically booking large, expensive conferences or multi-day retreats, many organisations are looking at smaller team events, local offsites, half-day workshops and targeted team development sessions. Many even run great interventions with us at on-site rooms and spaces.

And when designed properly, a smaller event can actually deliver more value, not less.

Small group team building is on the rise in Brisbane.

Many clients are finding that big results can come from the smaller budget outlay attached to tailored small team activities or workshops.

When people think of corporate team building, they often picture large conference groups, elaborate events and dozens, or even hundreds of participants. We run plenty of these large events, but some of the best outcomes often come from working with smaller groups. For intact teams, leadership groups,...

Great to be running our Nexus networking game this morning at the Experience Gold Coast mega famil in support of our friends at The Imperial Hotel. 150 energetic buyers and sellers networked in the beautiful ballroom before heading off to their business meetings at SeaWorld.

Experience Gold Coast is a wonderful showcase of all that the GC has to offer for events and business tourism.

Whilst Sabre works Australia and World-Wide, the Gold Coast will always be our home and we love working with clients here.

How to Make Team Building and Workshops Actually Stick

One hour.

That’s how quickly people can forget half of what they have learned during a course or team building workshop.
If people forget half of what they have learned in an hour, how much sticks after that? After a day, a large proportion of the detail may already have faded, 70% of it in fact. After a week, participants may remember little more than a few broad ideas, an enjoyable activity or an interesting conversation, but forget around 75%.

For organisations investing time and money in workshops, leadership development or team building, that represents a serious risk to return on investment.

A workshop might be engaging, well facilitated and positively reviewed on the day, but the real measure of success is not whether people enjoyed the session. It is whether something changes afterwards with team and business performance.

Do people communicate more effectively?
Are responsibilities clearer?
Are meetings more focused?
Does the team make better use of its available strengths?

Without practical reinforcement, even the best workshop can become another isolated event that everyone enjoyed but nobody applied.

AI AND TEAMWORK:

We recently conducted an international survey investigating the use of AI within HR and L&D contexts.

Why? Because we wanted to better understand how the use of AI impacts teamwork, and how views on this are evolving as the use of AI becomes more widespread. We surveyed 250 individuals working in HR, L&D and OD to discover how AI is shaping teamwork.

AI is no longer an abstract future concept – it is shaping the day‑to‑day experiences of teams right now. As organisations adopt new tools and experiment with AI‑enabled ways of working, teams face a period of adjustment marked by both opportunity and uncertainty. Some processes become faster, some tasks become automated, and some contributions begin to shift. This can create ambiguity: who is responsible for what, and what does “good teamwork” look like when AI acts as a contributor?

Belbin offers a human‑centred framework that helps teams understand their collective strengths and contributions at a time when clarity is essential. By making visible the behavioural dynamics within a team, Belbin provides a foundation for dialogue, alignment and resilience as technology evolves.

Why Data-Driven Team Building Delivers Better Workplace Results:

Moving from pure fun to genuine purpose is heralding the rise of 'Data-Driven Team Building'.

Team building has traditionally been associated with fun activities, shared laughs and a welcome break from the workplace. Those experiences may still matter, they can build rapport, lift energy and create positive memories, but do they have any real ROI?

Increasingly, organisations are asking a more important question: What will this actually improve when the team returns to work in terms of individual and team performance?

Modern team building is shifting away from activities based largely on entertainment, guesswork or broad assumptions. The focus is now moving towards performance-based experiences supported by meaningful and evidence-based team data.
