Have you had your smoke alarms checked lately? Did you know that smoke alarms have an operational expiry date of 10 years? They usually have a date of manufacture or date of installation printed or written on them that you might find when changing the batteries. Another dead give away is if they have gone yellow, they’re probably out of date. Best to check them now before the heaters start coming out and give us a call if you need a replacement. We can also perform operational tests on them if they are in date and you just want to be sure they’re actually functioning. Contact us if you would like any help.

A customer asked us to have a look at why their solar system hadn’t produced anything in a couple of months while we were onsite doing some other work. A quick inspection found this hot and burnt conduit section just near the isolator. We don’t generally work on solar but this was a dangerous, potential fire hazard caused by water accumulating in the conduit bend which broke down the cable and caused a short. We got the panels disconnected and then referred the customer on to a solar installer for the repairs. If you notice anything strange like this or any weird burning smells around any of your solar equipment, contact a solar installer immediately as this stuff can turn into a major problem real quick.

Have a look at these relics that came out of a job last week. Complete with the old cloth covered cabling. Gotta be 100 years old. This cabling is usually run in steel conduit and if undisturbed is generally ok. As soon as you start moving it around though it can crack really easy and expose the conductor as you can see on the back of the light switch.

If you come across any of this stuff at your home, let us know and we can come out and inspect the condition of it and arrange a rewire if necessary.

This is why you should never throw batteries in the bin. If you get a short across the positive and negative with some fuel, a fire will start real easy.
