First tiny fruits on our Carra carra orange, I figure they may fall off as the trees still small. This orange must be the Rolls Royce of oranges as it’s so sweet, tasty and juicy and when I first tried one I had to have one. Our red shahtoot, now in its second year and looks primed to have its first decent crop.

Now that we’re feeling the first warmth of spring, we’ve planted the first seedlings of our next hybrid, Olivia’s Pink X Aussie Gold. Olivia’s Pink was my first hybrid, a cross between Connie Mayer and Purple Haze, both self sterile varieties. Olivia’s Pink has pink/purple flesh with a pink flower and Aussie Gold is the yellow skin, with a white flower. We’re hoping to produce our own yellow skin, pink flesh, but if at least at the end of this process we have another copy of Olivia’s Pink , it will have AG genetic material in it and if back crossed with AG again maybe the next hybrid will be the goods. Still have another 16 plants to go in over the next month and hopefully they’ll reach the top of the pole by the end of this coming season.

Four fruits set on the Selenicerius Megalanthus. Not an easy variety to cultivate as it’s sensitive to rusts and rot in winter, but when harvested, produce fruits around 150 - 250g, with white sweet flesh and large seeds.

Today’s projects. Planted a tasty and large sumo mandarin for the young family and finally a berry trellis with three boysenberry to start with. I’ve given them some filtered shade as everything gets so scorched here and my last attempt at raspberries ended up with expensive crisps.

First Palora have set without any help from myself or stored pollen as they’re self fertile, now the long wait begins.

First eight seedlings of the next hybrid, with twelve more nearly ready, Olivia’s Pink X Aussie Gold. Hoping for a minimum of purple flowers with yellow skinned fruit, but expecting to have to back cross them with Aussie Gold again for the yellow skin to show. Maybe the start of a six to seven year project of producing a purple flowered, pink fleshed, yellow skinned fruit.
