The leak that no one could find…
This one was a challenge.
The homeowner on this large rural property had noticed their water pressure slowly getting worse over time. An old well on the property had unexpectedly filled with water, eventually overflowing into a paddock and making its way down to the dam.
Then one day… they had no water at all inside the house.
Their regular plumber had already done everything you’d expect:
✔️ Checked for wet patches around the property.
✔️ Inspected the subfloor.
✔️ Isolated the water service at the old pump shed.
✔️ Pressure tested between the water meter and the house.
No obvious leak could be found.
That’s when we were called in with our specialist leak detection equipment.
Using our underground pipe locator, we traced the old galvanised steel water service across the property before switching to our acoustic leak detection equipment.
The first loud noise led us to an underground galvanised tee, but it turned out to simply be carrying the large volume of water rushing towards the actual leak.
Continuing along the branch line, the acoustic equipment pinpointed a second, much louder noise beneath a small brick pathway.
After carefully excavating the area, we uncovered an old galvanised repair that had completely corroded away and failed.
Interestingly, the leaking water was draining directly into an underground stormwater pipe, explaining why there were no obvious wet patches despite the enormous water loss.
The failed section was repaired, pressure tested, and full water pressure was restored to the house.
Sometimes leak detection isn’t about finding the wet patch—it’s about having the right equipment, the experience to interpret what it’s telling you, and knowing where to dig.
