The Big Tree in Mandurah 🌳

Standing proudly at the intersection of Pinjarra Road and Old Pinjarra Road, this majestic tuart is estimated to be more than 200 years old and remains one of Mandurah’s most recognised natural landmarks.

In June 2022, concerns were raised after a significant crack developed within the tree’s structure. Following assessment, Hayes Tree Care implemented a preservation focused management plan aimed at retaining the tree safely for the community to enjoy for generations to come.

Approximately 30% of the canopy was carefully weight reduced to lessen the load on the compromised union and reduce movement within the trunk. Over time, the tree responded positively, with signs that the crack had begun to close naturally.

A temporary support system was then installed and in May 2026 the next stage of preservation was completed with the installation of a permanent brace system designed to support the tree long term.

Fun facts about the ‘Big Tree’:
• The canopy now stands around 18 metres tall
• The trunk is approximately 288cm wide, about the size of a medium trampoline
• It is listed on the Significant Tree Register, an initiative under the City of Mandurah’s local planning scheme to protect trees of significance within the community

The City of Mandurah recently shared that saving the tree is “all about community pride, protecting our natural heritage, and supporting local wildlife” a statement we fully support.

Listed as number 2 on the Significant Tree Register, the Big Tree holds important ecological, historical and cultural value within the Mandurah community. Projects like this highlight the importance of modern arboriculture balancing public safety with the preservation of significant trees wherever possible.
