When trees come down in a neighbourhood, the animals that called them home need somewhere to go 🐨 🦜

This customer saw what was happening on her street and decided to do something about it. We installed habitat boxes across 6 of her eucalyptus trees, giving local wildlife a permanent home on her property.

The boxes were selected for: Brushtail Possum, Boobook Owl, Kookaburra, Large, Medium and Small Parrots, and Pardalote. Placement took some thought too. Each box had to account for afternoon sun, wind direction, and the behaviour of the animal it was designed for. A nocturnal possum and a pardalote don't want the same aspect.

It didn't take long for the locals to notice - rosellas have already moved into one of the parrot boxes, and there's been some serious house-inspecting happening at the kookaburra box and a few others 🏡

Not every dead tree needs to come down - especially when it's still doing important work for local wildlife.

A habitat prune is carried out on dead trees that still hold real value for local wildlife - hollows, perches, nesting spots. Rather than removing the tree entirely, we carefully take out the smaller, unstable branches that pose a risk, while keeping the main structure intact so the habitat stays functional. And if there are no hollows yet? We can always add some.

It's a more involved job that requires an arborist who knows what they're looking at. In this case, three of our team worked together to get it done - tree made safe, habitat preserved, property looking neat. 👍🌳

Let's talk about protection and prevention 🌳

This River Red Gum ring tree — shaped by Indigenous people generations ago — was struggling with mistletoe (a parasitic plant that steals water and nutrients), possum damage, and dry weather.

Adelaide Tree Service's approach:
• Selective mistletoe removal
• A possum guard
• Crown reduction on nearby trees
• Extra summer watering

Most people prune when they can see the problem. By then, they've already missed the best window.

Right now, your trees are dormant and that's actually the ideal time to get an arborist's eyes on them because:
➡️ Nothing is hiding — no leaves means we can see every dead, damaged or risky branch clearly
➡️ Disease risk is lower — pests and pathogens are far less active in the cooler months

Once the weather warms up, trees flush with new growth and our schedule fills quickly. We're currently booking 3 weeks out, so if you want your trees assessed and pruned before spring hits, now is the time to lock it in.

Wet weather changes what trees can hold. 🌳

It doesn't take much for a stressed tree to fall - sometimes it's gradually, sometimes it's all at once.

When we're called to jobs like these, the priority is making the site safe, then working through the removal properly - cutting back to sound wood and leaving the site clean once it's done.

If a tree's come down on your property, don't try to move it yourself.

Not every tree needs to come down, but some do.

A few common reasons removal is the right call:
✔️ Safety risk, especially near structures or power lines
✔️ Disease or infestation that can't be treated
✔️ Structural damage making the tree unstable
✔️ Making way for construction or landscaping plans

It's not always obvious from the ground which category a tree falls into. That's where a proper assessment comes in.
