Works to Resume on Cox Street Solar Lights

Preparation works are set to resume on Cox Street from Tuesday 10 March 2026, with crews continuing footing installation for new solar street lighting.

Works will take place along the section of Cox Street between Gray and Lonsdale Streets, after completing footings on the Gray Street to Ballarat Road section earlier this year.

Once preparation works are completed, poured concrete will require a minimum curing period of 14 days before further works can continue. Please be aware that adverse weather conditions can affect the duration of the curing process.

Following this, installation of lighting poles will commence. Further updates on impacts caused by the installation will be provided in the coming weeks.

During periods of activity, short-term traffic management will be in place and signposted while contractors carry out these works. This will include brief detours and reduced speed limits. Vehicles are advised to observe changes and to take care driving in the area.

Council thanks the community for their patience and looks forward to seeing progress continue in the coming weeks.

South West Earthworks is proud announce that we will play a major role in the Mackenzie Falls Revitalisation works. For the next few months we will be working closely along side Parks Victoria and Ace Contractors Group Pty Ltd to complete this project.

A breif overview of the project.

The Victorian Government is investing $7.76 million in revitalising the Mackenzie Falls visitor precinct — one of the state’s most visited natural attractions — to improve safety, accessibility, cultural interpretation, and visitor experience.

The project is part of broader enhancements guided by the Greater Gariwerd Landscape Management Plan and is being developed on the Traditional Lands of the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung Peoples, with active partnership from Gunditj Mirring, Eastern Maar and Barengi Gadjin Traditional Owner groups.

🔨KEY FEATURES OF THE UPGRADE

✅️Safety Improvements

• Geotechnical assessments identified rockfall risks — these will be addressed with rockfall barriers, cables, mesh, and boardwalk realignment.
• Measures will also discourage unsafe access into the water, and swimming remains prohibited due to risk.

👀 New Viewing Platform

• A larger viewing platform at the base of the falls designed to hold at least 40 people will provide better sightlines and safety.
• The design incorporates cultural elements, including motifs tied to the blackfish, significant to the Cultural landscape.

🚶 Accessible Walking Upgrades

• The existing Bluff Lookout Walk will be upgraded to a Grade 1 accessible trail, making it easier for visitors with prams, wheelchairs or limited mobility to enjoy sweeping views of the falls and valley.

🚗 Parking and Arrival Improvements

• The carpark area will be reworked to improve traffic flow, create safer pedestrian access, improve drainage and increase capacity: about 120 car spaces plus 14 for long vehicles.

🪶 Signage & Interpretation

• New and improved signage will help with wayfinding and provide better interpretation of environmental and cultural heritage.

PLANNING for the long-anticipated revitalisation of MacKenzie Falls has reached a significant milestone, with Parks Victoria confirming that detailed design work is complete, a construction contractor has been appointed and off-site works are now underway. **Project Update – Cox Street Solar Lighting**

Preparatory works will commence today (Monday 12 January) for footings of permanent solar street lighting along Cox Street.

Works will be undertaken in sections to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and road users. Works will take approximately one week to complete (weather permitting), with the second stage of pole installation scheduled for mid-February once footings have cured.

Please expect temporary traffic changes including intermittent closures of sections, reduced speeds and detours in place while works are underway. Take care when travelling in the area and consider an alternative route while works are completed.

Traffic Management Plans can be found on our website at https://www.sthgrampians.vic.gov.au/About-Council/Current-Projects/Cox-Street-Redevelopment-Lighting-Installation
