Town and Country Gardens

Town and Country Gardens Peta Trahar's garden Woodgreen is beautiful in all seasons and it together with the nursery are open by appointment. Please call or FB me. Many are rare.

The Nursery is open by appointment. Garden and horticultural groups are welcome. Peta’s interest has always been in the more interesting and unusual plant species, including those with variegated foliage. The Woodgreen garden is a product of her collecting since establishing a first garden in the 1970’s. It is now the source of the plants in the nursery. The range offered includes perennials, shrubs and bulbs among others. Occasionally Peta takes her plants to selected festivals.

Time to go as we peep through Fuchsia aborescens. I'll be back on the treadmill over the next few days, a garden club committee meeting and a community info day at the local rural Fire Brigade centre. In between, lots of gardening. I have heaps of packets of seed to plant. No rest for the wicked!😉

Narcissus 'Jenny'. Suzie came today and I watched her fall head over heels in love with this little daffodil. Who could blame her! 'Jenny' is a Cyclamineus seedling raised in the 1940's by Cyril Coleman of Cranbrook, Kent, UK. I hope that you like it too.

This clump of gorgeous daisies has me entranced. The colour is perfect, soft pink with a kind of lemony salmon base. It's in the Osteospermum Serenity series and is called 'Spring Day'. First thing in the morning I head down to say "hello". Luckily the wallabies have left it alone. (So far).

A Winter scene. Hard to believe that in a few more weeks the bare branches will be covered in leaves and blossom. Look at the lichen on the tree trunks. If you get lost, the lichen usually grows on the cool south side.

I have a sort of love/hate relationship with violets. Yes, they are pretty now but if only they would stop trying to take over. Pictured is the main culprit, the common purple one. I do have pink and white sorts and a couple of others but they tend to be shy. Is there a saying, "retiring violets"? If someone goes to the trouble of picking me a bunch of my purple violets then I might change my mind. Judyth McLeod had a really interesting nursery years ago at Bowen Mountain called Honeysuckle Cottage. She had an extensive violet collection kept in a special little wooden house. When you went in there the fragrance was a delight.

So, I did tell you that I've been quite occupied. Well, last Sunday I went to a "frog day' at the Kurrajong Heights Bowling Club. It was SO interesting. I've always liked to hear frogs in our garden and by our dams. Tadpoles are great fun. We learned how to make frog hotels where they can hide in pipes made of cut off hoses. Tom ran the presentation. He held up one of his beautiful frogs. She seemed to like us admiring her.🐸

We have some really beautiful old Camellias here at "Woodgreen". I think that this one is 'Donation'. She's tall and some of the blooms tend to look down which is good because that way you are gazing up into their faces. 'Donation' was bred by Colonel R. S. Clarke of Sussex in 1941.

Nasturtiums. Plant snobs would probably dismiss them as being too ordinary. I'd have to admit though that my mother said that in her family they were regarded as a last resort in a vase. Well, I love them! This one is a really bright pink and thank goodness is not being eaten by the beasties. Maybe the leaves are too peppery! More please.
