Solar photovoltaic installations, or “solar farms”, play a crucial role in generating renewable electricity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and mitigating climate change by producing clean energy. Reliance on solar farms enhances energy security by diversifying the energy mix and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, but it also poses challenges like intermittency. Apart from day/night intermittency, in high lightning areas in particular, lightning strikes can result in downtime losses.

Large solar farms, in even modest lightning areas, can be struck directly by lightning many times each year. Indirect effects (lightning striking nearby, or on the transmission lines connected to the solar farm, can increase the number of such events by many multiples. Hence, without appropriate mitigation measures, downtime losses are inevitable.

For example, a single 12-hour outage at a 300 MW solar farm in a region where the lightning ground flash density is 4 flashes/km2/yr results in a loss of almost a quarter million dollars.

LPI has a systematic, four-step plan for applying lightning mitigation to solar farms.

As global leaders in lightning protection, we often get questions about what approach to use. We believe in selecting the best solution for the project at hand.

For capturing lightning strikes, we sometimes get questions that mix the product with the placement method. These two aspects should be treated separately.

Today we will introduce the main hardware technologies that are used for lightning protection projects across all industry sectors. They are:
1. Conventional lightning rods.
2. Advanced air terminals.

Conventional lightning rods have been around since the time of Benjamin Franklin in the 1750s and they are typically positioned with the rolling sphere method. These rods provide reliable protection by safely directing lightning strikes to the ground.

In recent years, advanced air terminals have emerged, offering a more sophisticated approach to lightning protection. One example is Early Streamer Emission (ESE) technology. ESE air terminals enhance the initiation of upward streamers, improving the connection with the downward stepped leader from a thundercloud. This advanced mechanism increases the likelihood of intercepting and safely carrying the lightning strike to ground.

LPI’s “Stormaster” family of ESE air terminals are designed and tested to all aspects of international standard NF C 17-102 (2011). LPI has also performed additional testing to the high-current parameters in IEC 62305-1. The Stormaster system is very easy to install and extremely cost-effective.

Did you know?

An interesting fact about lightning strikes in Queensland is that it's one of the most lightning-prone regions in the world! The state experiences over 1 million lightning strikes annually, with the northern and central parts of Queensland being especially affected. In fact, Queensland’s far north and central coast see some of the highest lightning strike densities globally. This high lightning activity is due to Queensland's tropical climate, which creates ideal conditions for thunderstorms, especially during the wet season.
