Over the last two weeks we hosted two senior students from Hymba Yumba Independent School for a hands-on look into the civil construction industry, for work experience.

Mahalia spent her time in the head office getting a comprehensive look at how our operations run behind the scenes. She threw herself into a wide range of departments, gaining experience across administration, safety, HR, estimating, equipment & fleet, reception, and marketing.

Meanwhile, Terry took a hands-on approach out with the workshop and maintenance crew, getting stuck into the mechanical side of our operations and working alongside our experienced team.

Providing meaningful pathways and real-world experience for young people in our community is incredibly important to us at Shamrock Civil. Both Mahalia and Terry brought great energy to their work experience, and we have no doubt they both have incredibly bright futures ahead of them.

Things are kicking along nicely at our Townsville University Hospital project - where we are running our latest community initiative 'Construction with Purpose' - last week we fired up the BBQ to support our partners at Ronald McDonald House -North Australia

Site BBQ's are a staple for us, but they always mean a little more when they serve a dual purpose. Beyond a good lunch, it was an opportunity for our crew, subbies and suppliers to dig deep and support the incredible work RMHC does in providing a 'home away from home' for families with seriously ill children.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed, or has donated so far. We are well on our way to smashing our target of $10,000 for RMHC at the completion of the project! It’s a privilege to work on a project that supports the local community while giving back to those who need it most.

We are excited to launch our newest 'Construction with Purpose' initiative in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Australia.

Through our work on the Townsville University Hospital Carpark 17 extension, we’re committing $1 for every man-hour worked to support families with seriously ill children, turning progress on site into real impact in the community. Raising money via on-site BBQ's and raffles, our aim is to donate over $10,000 by the end of the project.

At Shamrock Civil, we believe the projects we deliver should go beyond infrastructure. This initiative is about supporting the communities we work in and making a meaningful difference where it matters most.

Celebrating 50 years of Easter in the Country! ☘️

🏗️ From School to Site: Fred’s 12-Month Journey

A huge shout-out to Fred, who officially hit his 12-month milestone with the Shamrock Civil team at the end of January!
Fred first joined us through our Glenala State High School Pathways program. Since then, he has transitioned from a student with a curiosity for the industry to a dedicated Apprentice who is absolutely "taking to water" when it comes to site technicals.

We caught up with Fred to see how his first year has been:

On his favorite part of the job:
"Probably just seeing everything being built and come together. When we started here on this site, it was just dirt. Seeing the progress from nothing to a finished site is the best part."

On the power of mentorship:
Fred knows that a good start depends on the right guidance. "The people make it. Darren has been a massive mentor for me, and Jacob has been a huge help on the ground."

Looking ahead:
While he’s currently mastering the survey gear and getting his hours up on the excavators, Fred is already thinking long-term. His 5-year goal? Mastering the technical side and eventually moving into the office (where the air con is!). 🤣

From a local school program to a full-time career path, Fred is a brilliant example of what’s possible with the right attitude and a bit of dirt under your fingernails.

🏗️ Meet the Team: Jacob’s Journey at Shamrock from school leaver to machine operator, Jacob has been hitting the ground running!

After joining us through labour hire and proving his grit across sites like Maroon Dam and Mudgeeraba, we’re stoked to officially have him "on the books" as part of the Shamrock family.
Jacob is currently a CW3, balancing labouring with operating machines to keep our projects moving. Here’s a quick look at what life on-site looks like for him:
🛠️ The Daily Grind
* Favorite Gear: The Posi-Track. "You can basically do anything with a Posi; lift, grab, everything."
* The Goal: Mastering the diggers next by learning from the best operators in the business.
* The Motivation: The people. "Everyone’s here to have fun and work hard."

🎓 Mentorship Matters
Jacob knows that in this game, you’re only as good as the crew around you.
He gave a massive shout-out to his mentors:
* The Veterans: Darren Morris (shout-out Uncle Darren!), Damo, and Dave. - The triple threat of D's!
* The Subbies: Learning the ropes from the likes of Mickey Lau and Scotty Mac.
* The Mates: Having a laugh with Freddy.

> Jacob’s Advice for Newbies:
"Civil is where it’s at. With the Olympics and everything coming up, the industry is booming. You aren't doing the same thing every day, you’re learning skills you actually need for life."
