The wait is almost over! 🌸

As September settles in and our beautiful Bearded Irises show off their gorgeous new growth, we are busy behind the scenes getting the field ready to welcome you all back to Smokin Heights.

We are so excited to announce that our gates will be open every Sunday, 10am-4pm throughout October!

There is nothing quite like wandering through the rows, surrounded by a rainbow of blooms, and choosing a selection of freshly dug bare-root rhizomes to take home to your own garden. Pots of iris and garden fillers will also be available for purchase on our open days.

Planning a visit with a club, society, or a big group of fellow plant lovers? We would love to host you! We are booking private visits by appointment for large groups on alternative days, so you can enjoy the field at your own pace.

Keep a close eye on our page over the coming weeks as we share sneak peeks of what’s in bloom.

✨For group bookings or to explore our latest varieties online, head over to the Smokin Heights Website or send us a message right here.

We can't wait to share the magic of the new season with you all! πŸ’œ

Today we finished weeding row number 45! πŸ’ͺ We're slowly but surely making our way through the field, and with 25 rows left to go, the finish line is starting to feel a little closer.

There's still plenty of work ahead, but it's hard to complain when this is the view at the end of the day.

And a very Happy Father's Day to all the dads, grandads and father figures out there. We hope you've all had a wonderful day! πŸ’™

Back into it tomorrow!

We have spotted a little bit of colour in amongst the field at Smokin Heights.

At this time of year we look for changes amongst the varieties we grow.

We look for the early varieties putting on good strong leaf growth. The mid and late varieties are slowly waking up from their Winter slumber.

The Aril Bred has great leaf structure already. We keep an eye out for the hidden stems amongst the varieties. They won't be too far away!

The standard Dwarf Varieties bloom first before putting on strong growth, we spotted a couple varieties with the odd spot of colour. Last year's photo's will need to suffice!

The New Release Tall Bearded Iris Variety 'Kiss Like Honey' is covered in stems, and we haven't checked the Intermediate and Border Bearded's.

We did not think to take the camera with us while we weeded today. Maybe tomorrow, we are on a mission to complete the weeding on the registered varieties as quickly as possible. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

September is well and truly here, and our irises are showing excellent growth.

Working so closely and intimately with the plants makes this progress feel even more rewarding.

The ladybugs and earthworms are putting on a wonderful show for us right now too, though the earwigs and caterpillars are strictly uninvited from our weeding sessions!

My eldest daughter officially dubbed us as "professional weeders" recentlyβ€”and honestly, I guess we are!

Much of the same tomorrow, have a great night beautiful peeps X

Bloom of the Week #13 – Catch My Eye

Happy first day of spring!

To celebrate the start of spring, this week's Bloom of the Week is Catch My Eye.

It's always exciting to see the first blooms beginning to appear in the field, and this one has caught our eye just in time for the change of season.

Even more exciting, Catch My Eye will be available for the first time in our new catalogue, launching in just a few weeks.

Spring has arrived, and we're looking forward to seeing what the coming weeks bring! 🌸

What are you looking forward to seeing bloom in your garden this spring?

Today was a surprise. The weather was really warm out weeding, to the extent both Bailey and myself could feel our skin burning! We were very thankful for some cloud cover.
I had a little reprieve from weeding, while I waited on the Farrier to trim the pony and Quarter horses feet. Rhaine has a specialised Farrier come in for her feet so she had a tie up lesson instead!
I have bred birds most of my adult life. I now only own a pair of Major Mitchell's, which I love dearly. The hen is a new hen since earlier in the year and a young bird at that. Just 2 years old. I have noticed the racket they have been making in their enclosure which tells me they had eggs and to my astonishment ,'Yes' they have eggs. Lets see how this all works out......I am excited to see!!
Back to iris the Aril Breds are putting on good growth with the beautiful sunshine we are experiencing.
We have cleaned the new release and all the median varieties. Bailey and myself are currently working our way through the 'D' Tall Bearded Varieties.πŸ₯΅
Pretty boring but weeding continues tomorrow 😊
