Smokin Heights specialize in the growing, hybridizing, Importing and selling of Bearded Iris, the flower of the Goddess. No overseas sorry. XX

Posting from our field to your garden in all states of Australia except NT. Smokin Heights is operated by Melissa and her son Bailey Schiller. Together we are hybridizers, Importers and Growers of quality Bearded Iris in all height classes. We specialize in hybridizing novelty iris. Smokin Heights catalogue and online shop is open from Mid October each year. Rhizome are shipped over Summer bare rooted, washed and trimmed. We carry an ICA-29 permit which allows us to ship to WA and TAS. We cannot ship overseas at this time. We recommend many growers from USA that may be able to help you. Examples are; Mid America Garden, Schreiner's, Keith Keppel, Superstition and Sutton's. Our season runs from October through to beginning of March. No orders will be accepted after this date as our field gets a break and re-planted! Smokin Heights Garden is spread over 8 acres and is open on Saturday and Sundays 10am-4pm throughout October only. Other days in October by appointment. Large groups welcome including buses. Any queries please do not hesitate to make contact with Mel or Bailey.

Here are some seedlings that are still under evaluation!
The C seedlings have been around for a while now, without our seedling book in front of me, I think 2019 was their first bloom year.
It is so important to evaluate iris in the hard years and the good years. A hard year is drought, pests, weather conditions eg wind and temperature fluctuations (which we get a lot of) to see how the rhizome and bloom tolerate these conditions.
A good year would be good rainfall, no pests, clean foliage, abundance of bloom! Basically a perfect growing year.
It is amazing how in a good rainfall year how stems snap like carrots in the wind, which we feel is not a desirable trait! 💜💜💜

The weekend that was.....
Saturday was spent getting the class of 27 into their home for the next year! 9 rows planted. We were on a mission as to beat the rain and thunderstorms forecast for Sunday. They have been watered in sufficiently with the rain received. We now need to arrange pipe work for continued watering.
Sunday began by taking photo's throughout the field. The wind has been exceptional this year! Yesterday began as a calm day and I finished taking photo's around 4.30pm with gentle rain falling most of the afternoon. By the time I went to bed the thunderstorms and wind gusts were crazy again!
Hybridizing and photo's are goals for us both this week!

A few little ghosts seem to have appeared amongst the irises! 👻

Don’t worry, they’re not haunting the field. Just our little organza bags keeping watch over the seed pods as they develop.

Looks like we’ve got a few Halloween visitors this year!

We did a quick drive-by of the field this morning to show you exactly how things are looking right now.

It is a beautiful mix out here, we have lots of gorgeous varieties in full bloom, some that have finished up for the season, and plenty of fresh buds still waiting to burst open!

We all need a Heart Lines in our iris garden! She sure is stunning with all those ruffles and fresh colour! 💜

The past 2 weeks we have noticed larger ducks making unusual sounds while they are flying around out by the field. Almost a Goose sound!!
It so seems mum, dad and 4 babies have flown in for the habitat by the dam down the back of our property.
The camera was maxed out at around 60 metres to get these photo's!

We are noticing the iris are taking their time to bloom this year., even the SDB are still trying to bloom!
The Imports which came out of quarantine last year may bloom, they may not bloom. We would rather they settle into our climate after their rigorous treatment to get here. The rhizome are treated with Methyl Bromide after their initial inspection as per our permit regulations.
Do you think that the treatment would have an impact on the way the rhizome acclimatizes and grows here in Australia?
Do you think that Iris imports coming from countries in the Northern Hemisphere would be affected by growing in the Southern Hemisphere?
Thankfully Australia has no tolerance for infected plants of any kind and the need to protect our flora and fauna is imperative.
