Here at The Native Gardener, we believe that improved knowledge of and a deeper understanding for our native species begins through their propagation & horticulture. The Native Gardener also works to develop the practical application of our WA native species via native gardens and through native verge conversions and / or other associated social endevours. We're big on biodiversity and localised e

cology around here too, particularly where local species are conerned. And of course, the use of our WA native species for cultural purposes by the Noongar Nation (and beyond) is something The Native Gardener has a distinct and personal connection to. Finally we get to plant our lovely tubestock into the revamped front garden at the Dryandra Aged Care village (Roshana) in Kellerberrin !
Wheatbelt Native Gardens (WNG) approached Dryandra late last year with a proposal and schedule of operations to revamp what was a rather weedy, boring and stale front entrance garden.
A variety of unforeseen circumstances has seen the project face a few delays throughout 2027, but we were finally able to get some installations in today and will follow through with more into 2027.
The goals with this project combine requirements such as low-growth with colour, diversity and overall amenity to create a stunning and welcoming entrance to the facility.
No great surprise really that we're including plenty of low-growing Eremophilas, with a few Melaleucs, native grasses and a number of surprises.
It also has to be said that the Dryandra project is typical of where WNG excels - Wheatbelt urban environment, diversity, colour and so forth.

That's the tag line or motto for the Shire of Kellerberrin, but my question is this;
Which landscape ?
At this time of year attention is focused on rolling fields of a certain bright yellow crop, yet there are other landscapes throughout the Wheatbelt which don't seem to attract quite the same attention.
And yet here we are in a Biodiversity Hotspot with a veritable smorgasbord of unique native plant species and associated vegetation types - holding on and surviving despite being almost 90% eradicated.
And if you want to discuss the economy of that crop (one presumes this is the 'rich' part of that tagline ...), then how about the economic value of natural vegetation through tourism, enhanced pollination services, erosion control, shelter / wind breaks, urban cooling, food and medicinal research value, Indigenous Heritage, Sense of Place and much, much more.

It's not often you get a freebie from the government, but the Treebate tags for the nursery (Kellerberrin's Wheatbelt Native Gardens of course) arrived today just in time for weekend retail.

I've been nutting out this whole WA Treebate thing and am pleased to advise that it's actually very accommodating for even a boutique 'Cottage Industry' nursery such as WNG.
There's a little bit of a process for you our wonderful customers, although it's straightforward enough.
An individual person (you must be over 18) can claim up to 5 trees to a total value of $150 under Treebate.
We've even had our receipt format approved by Treebate and can guide you through the rest of the process when you get here over the weekend (retail as always Sat & Sun 8am to 3pm)
Eligible species immediately available this weekend include;
- Pittosporum angustifolium (not all trees are Eucs 😁)
- Eucalyptus campaspe
- Eucalyptus salmonophloia
- Eucalyptus kruseana
- Eucalyptus stricklandii
- Eucalyptus loxophleba (incl. smooth bark)
- Eucalyptus torquata
- Eucalyptus grossa
- Eucalyptus orbifolia
- Numerous 1-off Eligible Eucs in forestry and super tubes
- Acacia cowaniana
- Acacia acuminata
- Callistemon phoenecius
Please note that WNG is a native plant nursery. I'm happy to show you the Treebate process and provide the details as required by a nursery, but am unable to provide instruction, guidance or assistance with Government processes or apps etc... just saying !

Not much time these days for anything other than propagation, propagation and, well, propagation.
But the Wheatbelt Native Gardens laboratory and test site is starting to fill with colour as Makuru morphs into Djilba.

It looks like another wet (and cold !) weekend is on the way for the Central Wheatbelt - which means it's a perfect opportunity to head for Wheatbelt Native Gardens retail and grab a load of our quality Wheatbelt species tubestock.
And of course, it's also a brilliant time to plant our lovely tubestock.
Now look.
Wheatbelt Native Gardens is currently hammered on the Eremophila front true, but we've got loads of lovely Wheatbelt Melaleucas, Eucs, Acacias, a spattering of Thryptomenes, a selection of Hakeas, Themeda trianda, Austrostipa elegantissima, way too many Pittosporum angustifolium, some cracking Maroon Bush .... Sat & Sun 8am to 3pm down the back lane from Price street.
Watch for the street sign at the top of the lane way, check Google maps.

Wheatbelt Native Gardens is adding tomorrow Friday to this weekend's usual retail routine, giving you all 3 days to come and grab some of our lovely, fully hardened off, ready to go, Wheatbelt / Regional species all in forestry tubes for excellent root development 😁.
Looks like some more rain is coming next week too and it's a cracking time of year to be planting your Wheatbelt garden anyway, so come and grab 'em.
Too much variety and detail to list here, so a few snaps attached that are really only the start.
As always, 8am to 3pm across all 3 days.
Rear access only via Price street, Kellerberrin.
Watch for the street sign and check Google maps.

It's hard to believe that our fully WA species native garden here in Kellerberrin is now 3 years old - and from bare native sand too after we stripped the exotics and foreign species that came with the property.
Of course, this garden serves several alternative functions related to our Wheatbelt Native Gardens enterprise.
For one thing it's a laboratory to test new species prior to developing them for the production process.
This garden also serves as a showcase to the local community, to demonstrate regional biodiversity, conservation, sense of place and more.
And the really satisfying part ?
99% of all plants in this garden have been propagated and grown by yours truly from local / regional sourced material.
Satisfaction guaranteed for sure.
