A line has to be drawn between what is an urban forest and a natural forest

The Urban Forest is a planed environment where forests are planned from beginning to end to suit the built environment around it

This includes the maintenance of this urban forest in the built environment with correctional pruning , watering , fertilisation and mulching and having a soil structure that will support the load of the tree in large storm and weather events

Where we run into issues in the Urban Forest is where an unsuitable tree selection is made as part of the planing process or the urban environment is changed so that the planned species do not suit the environment they were originally designed for by then becoming a risk to the planned environment as a danger to to people or infrastructure

This is where conflicts occur as arguments develop on whether preservation or redesign of the urban forest environment is required

This can be further complicated by conservation , preservation and historical and planning codes for a planned environment

The other is the establishment of endangered forest areas in already planned environments without adequate thought and consultations
With all stakeholders

As you can determine the natural forest has no issues except for access and determinations of the natural forest boundaries and external factors that can affect the ecological processes of the natural forest

The better determination in society and by governments of this would avoid the excessive disputes that currently occur in this natural and planned forest debate

Before buying a property to live in or to develop etc make sure you get a Consulting arborist to advise you on what trees Council will and won't let you take out, I've recently had to tell a few clients it's not a given you will get permission off Council to remove trees, they will make you redesign etc

Today in some Councils we are dealing with officers who will fight tooth and nail to keep any tree no matter how bad the condition or what damage it is causing, all appropriate tree management theory and practically is thrown out the door with these very green politically motivated officers who take their politics to work

I've had clients who had to expend great amounts or lose money having to resell
properties because of the above

I'm a great believer in the right tree in the right spot and that trees do outlive or outgrow sites were removal and replacement with more suitable species is the better way to grow and considered appropriate tree management

The urban environment is a planned environment and therefore tree planting and maintenance has to be well designed , planned and managed to be a success in such an environment

Trying to put a forest environment into a urban environment without the above is recipe for disaster

When you purchase a property with trees you also take on the care and maintenance of those trees and the issues they might be causing to the property and neighbouring property like damaging sewers, house foundations , retaining walls, roofs, guttering, pathways, drainage lines, water and electricity utilities to name a few

You are also responsible for any risk and hazards they cause and you are responsible to keep those trees in a safe and structurally sound condition

Building inspections do not cover trees

If there's trees on a property before you purchase it show diligence to yourself and get them checked it could save a lot heartache and money

Don't just assume Council will give you permission to take trees out , they won't and it will defy your beliefs what they will make you keep
