Today we came across an interesting nursery in Mt Evelyn that supports 85 employees living with disability. Shout out to Knoxbrooke Garden Centre. We bought 42 trees and shrubs for planting over coming weeks.

We’re propagating Bunya Pines. A very unique prehistoric Australian tree with cones that are the size of a bowling ball. We found five cones near the Melbourne Botanic gardens and have extracted >150 nuts. They wil one day stand tall and strong (like the one pictured) in the Wonga Forest.

One of my favourite Australian trees is the Kootamundra Wattle (Acacia Baileyana). These photos were taken yesterday in the Australiana zone (circa 600 Australian natives). The purple colour is actually derived from a waxy substance on the leaves that looks purple in certain light conditions. Stunning.

In our 5 years running the reforestation project at Wonga we have only ever seen evidence of snakes twice. The first was in June2022 when I turned over a rock and noticed a baby black snake. It was too cold for it to move being winter but gave me quite a shock nonetheless! The second was last Saturday when we discovered a skin of what appears to be a Copperhead (quite venomous) The snake was long gone. They are all a part of nature and avoid humans so we are conscious of them but hold no fears

One of our motivations for the reforestation program at Wonga Forest is to provide a habitat for nature. We were rewarded earlier this week whilst watering when two juvenile wedge tailed eagles appeared. They flew overhead hunting for about 15 minutes. So majestic.

We have bees! Isn’t it amazing what happens when you restore the natural world. Those clever bees are making their own hive. No surprise with the amount of flowering trees all over the Wonga Forest during Spring. Wonga honey anyone?

Yesterday the team from Viacon Construction spent the day volunteering at the Wonga Forest. It was the final planting day of the year and we managed to plant 120 trees. Great job team and a big thank you!

Thanks so much to all the volunteers that came along yesterday to the volunteer day. A big success with circa 350 trees planted. You are all very generous and we are very lucky to have you supporting the forest.
