Smell gas? Don't second-guess it, get outside.

Slow drain? Gurgling? It's not getting better on its own.

Peter runs through what's actually happening down there and what to do about it.

A slow drain or a gurgling sound usually means something is building up in the pipe, like fat, hair, wipes or tree roots, and the water is struggling to get past. It rarely clears itself. It tends to get worse until it blocks completely, often at the most inconvenient time.

💧 Is your water bill higher than it should be? Here's a quick test for a hidden leak.

🔸Turn off all taps and appliances (including the dishwasher and washing machine)
🔸Note your water meter reading
🔸Wait 10 minutes without using any water
🔸Check the meter again

If the reading has changed, or the small dial is still moving, you likely have a leak somewhere. Underground and in-wall leaks can run for months without a visible sign, so this test is worth doing every so often, especially if your bill suddenly jumps.
