Petition to the Parliament of Western Australia:

Protect Biodiversity by Regulating Non-Native Gardens
We, the undersigned residents of Western Australia, and beyond, call upon the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council to introduce regulations that phase out high-water, non-native ornamental gardens and support the transition to native, climate-adapted landscapes across the State.

Western Australia’s biodiversity is declining rapidly. Urban and rural areas have become dominated by lawns and exotic plants that:

• provide little to no habitat for native insects, bees, birds, and wildlife

• require excessive water and chemicals to maintain

• contribute to urban heat, water waste, and habitat loss

Native gardens, by contrast, are:
• water-wise
• pollinator-friendly
• culturally appropriate
• fire-smart
• biodiverse and self-sustaining

We therefore petition the Parliament to:

1. Regulate against the continued expansion of high-water, non-native gardens, including lawn-dominant landscaping in new developments.

2. Mandate minimum native planting requirements for all future residential, commercial, and public landscaping.

3. Provide incentives, rebates, and assistance to households transitioning to native gardens.

4. Develop a statewide Biodiversity & Insect Recovery Strategy, prioritising native vegetation corridors through suburbs, towns, and rural communities.

5. Support the No Mow movement as an educational and awareness raising campaign.

Our gardens can either accelerate biodiversity collapse — or help reverse it.
We urge the Parliament to act now.

14 signatures are still needed! Protect Biodiversity by Regulating Non-Native Gardens - “No Mo WA!”
