Ord Valley Turf is a locally owned and operated family business based in Kununurra in the East Kimberley on the banks of the stunning Ord River. We pride ourselves on delivering a healthy, high quality, environmentally friendly lawn that has been grown in optimum soil and is conditioned to withstand the high temperatures and humidity of the northern climate. EMPIRE™ Turf grows Australia Wide and provides a lawn grass which is easy to look after. It has a relatively fine leaf which is soft to touch, excellent wear tolerance and thrives in extreme heat and humidity. EMPIRE™ ZOYSIA generally requires less watering & less mowing than any other commercially grown lawn in Australia.

💦🌱 What a fantastic addition to Kununurra!

The town has been abuzz with excitement over the long-awaited opening of the new Kununurra Aquatic Centre, and it's wonderful to finally see it come to life!

We're really proud to have played a part in the redevelopment, supplying our locally grown Empire Zoysia turf for the beautiful green spaces surrounding the pools.

A huge congratulations to Kimberley Green Constructions, the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley and everyone else involved in bringing this project together. What a great outcome for our community!

We can't wait to see locals and families enjoying this space for many years to come. 💚🌱

🌱 The build-up is here. Is your lawn ready?

You can feel the seasons starting to change across the North West. The days are getting hotter, the soil is warming up, and after months of slower growth through the dry, your lawn is starting to wake up again.

Now's a great time to give it a little TLC before the Wet arrives.

A few simple things you can do:

👉 Give it a tidy-up. A light mow will help clear older growth and encourage fresh, even growth. No need to scalp it! A gentle rake can also help if there's a build-up of thatch.

👉 Get some nutrients into it. A balanced fertiliser will help bring back that lovely green colour and encourage new growth. As conditions warm, Empire Zoysia will start sending out runners and thickening up again.

👉 Give the soil some love too. A soil conditioner containing seaweed, kelp or humic substances can help support soil health and improve moisture and nutrient retention.

👉 Keep an eye on watering. As temperatures climb, your lawn will need more moisture. Stick with deeper, less frequent watering, adjusting as needed. If water is running off or patches aren't absorbing it properly, a wetting agent may help.

And one last thing... pay attention to the areas of your lawn that struggled through the dry. Now's a good time to work out what they might need before the Wet really kicks in.

🌱 So, what do we recommend for armyworm?

Following on from our post last week about armyworm season, we thought we'd answer one of the obvious questions: what should you actually use to protect your lawn?

At Ord Valley Turf, our go-to is Acelepryn.

We recommend it because it provides long-lasting control of a range of common turf pests, including lawn armyworm and lawn grubs, and can be used on all lawn varieties.

For home lawns, Acelepryn GR is a particularly handy option because it's a granular product, so you don't need spray equipment. It can simply be applied evenly over the lawn using a fertiliser spreader.

If you're treating lawn armyworm:

👉 Apply Acelepryn GR at 750g per 100m²
👉 Spread it evenly over the affected lawn
👉 Don't water or mow for 24 hours after application

Empire Zoysia does so well in the Kimberley and Pilbara because it’s grown right here in the north, in the same heat, humidity and soils it’ll face once it’s laid.

By the time it reaches your project, it’s already ready for northern conditions.
