Throwback Thursday
Not every project starts with a blank canvas.
The Middle School Redevelopment at St Patrick's College, completed in 2016, was about breathing new life into an existing part of the campus and adapting it to support contemporary teaching and learning.
The redevelopment transformed ageing classrooms of around 50m² into larger 80m² teaching spaces, while improving natural light, creating a more intuitive flow of movement and introducing a variety of informal learning areas throughout the building.
Looking back at these before and after images, it's hard to believe it's the same building.

A bit of country style for you today.

This one’s now submitted for planning, and we’re looking forward to seeing it move into the next stage.

Here’s a look at what we’ve been working on.

Digging back through the archives this week, we came across the Aquaculture Trade Training Centre at St Patrick's College.

It's still one of the more unique projects we've had the opportunity to work on. With fish tanks, aquaponics systems, workshops and teaching spaces all under one roof, it was designed to give students hands-on exposure to Tasmania's aquaculture industry and the chance to gain practical skills in a real-world setting.

Some projects stick in your memory because they're just a little different, and this is certainly one of them. It's great to look back on a project that combined education, industry and innovation in such a unique way.

Continuing our look back at St Patrick's College projects, we revisit the Edmund Rice Centre and Senior Science Extension, developments that helped shape the College's senior learning precinct.

Developed across separate stages and now functioning as a connected facility, these projects reflected a significant shift in educational thinking and the design of contemporary teaching spaces.

The Edmund Rice Centre replaced part of the original campus that had served the College for more than 50 years. Rather than simply replacing ageing facilities, the project sought to create a more collaborative and flexible environment for senior students. Traditional corridors were replaced with open common spaces, providing opportunities for group work, informal learning and individual study beyond the classroom.

Together with the Senior Science Extension, the facilities were designed to encourage greater interaction between students and teachers through transparent learning spaces, strong visual connections and adaptable environments capable of supporting a variety of teaching and learning styles.

A strong emphasis was also placed on creating a sense of community, with the open-plan layout encouraging connection, communication and engagement throughout the building.

Fifteen years on, it remains rewarding to see these spaces continuing to support senior students as they prepare for life beyond school.

Following the recognition of one of our projects at St Patrick's College in this year's Master Builders Awards, we thought we'd take the opportunity to revisit some of the projects we've worked on at the College over the past 15 years.
Each project reflects a different chapter in the ongoing development of the campus and changing approaches to education and student learning.

St Patrick's College Year 9 Campus (completed 2011)

The dedicated Year 9 Campus marked an important stage in the College's evolution and was one of the first projects to reflect a significant shift in teaching pedagogy and educational thinking.
At the time, the project reflected a changing approach to education, recognising that Year 9 students benefit from learning environments tailored to their specific stage of development. The campus was designed to support this transition period, providing dedicated teaching spaces and fostering a stronger sense of connection and identity for students as they progressed through secondary school.
We were fortunate to be involved in the planning and delivery of a project that represented not only a new building, but also a shift in educational thinking and pedagogy.
Now, 15 years after its completion, it's rewarding to see the facility continuing to serve students and staff.

Here is a recently completed unit we designed, shaped by the character of the existing 1960s home on site.

Brick and painted fibre cement create a restrained, durable palette that feels familiar yet contemporary, helping the new building settle naturally into its surroundings.

A further look inside the Penola Innovation Centre at St Patrick’s College, Launceston. These images focus on the learning environments and the quality of space within the STEM facility, including the cafeteria, which forms a central heart of the school.

Internally, plywood lining has been used to create a robust yet warm backdrop for daily student life — durable enough for a high-traffic environment while bringing texture and natural character to the spaces.

With much of the building perimeter required to function as fire separation walls, natural light is introduced from above through a series of sawtooth roof forms. This allows consistent daylight to pe*****te deep into the learning areas, creating bright, evenly lit laboratories and classrooms throughout the day.

Five years in the making, the Penola Innovation Centre, a new STEM facility, is now complete at St Patrick’s College, Launceston.
Conceived as a spine running through the centre of the campus, the building brings together learning, movement and connection. At its heart is a shared social hub — a place for collaboration, informal learning and the everyday life of the school.
With students returning today, the Penola Innovation Centre is ready for its first full year of use. Thank you, to St Patrick's College, Launceston , for the original conception and vision for the project, and to Beardwood Pty. Ltd. for their work and collaboration in bringing it to life.

Following on from last week’s externals — a look inside.
A calm, considered interior that continues the external palette, with natural timber and masonry shaping the spaces within.

Back visiting this project a couple of years on from completion. Great to see the additional deck and landscaping. The house has settled comfortably into its site, with a simple palette of timber, weathered iron and bagged brick. Externals for now — interiors to follow.
