Colour theory isn’t just for painters 🎨

‘Jungle Cloak’ fence provides a backdrop behind this Alpinia mutica that does something clever — its cool, muted green absorbs the plant rather than competing with it, letting those broad, glossy leaves read as sculptural form instead of just… foliage.

Then swap to Themeda australis in front of the same backdrop, and watch what happens. The warm coppery seed heads & glaucous, swaying foliage suddenly pop against the subtle grey, green palette. Complementary contrast at work — warm against cool, airy against solid, movement against stillness.

This is why background colour matters as much as plant selection. The same plant can look flat or extraordinary depending on what sits behind it.

‘Jungle Cloak’ essentially acts as a shadow, pushing plants forward and letting texture, colour, and form do the talking.

Think of it as the garden equivalent of a gallery wall. 🌿

Let your plants go to seed (free plants are always welcome), plant trap crops, turn and top up compost, mulch your garden beds and enjoy the fruits of your labour 🍓🌱

New or renew? We always ask ourselves this question at Florioscape, and you should too! We came across these heavily weathered, hardwood fence posts destined for the tip. We’ll just square these ones, give them a light sand and store them for future use.

One of the first things we do when starting a design is take inventory of existing site materials and how they could be repurposed. If not for the current job, we’ll take them back to the warehouse and turn them into something spectacular for the next.
