An update from Magpies Sporting Club Mackay
Proud of our guys that were onsite at the time!

Good Evening Members and Guests,

I would like to take this opportunity to update everyone on today's incident at Magpies Sporting Club. At approximately 1:35pm, a fire broke out on the roof of the new development construction site. The fire was confirmed and reported visually, and was quite a long way from the existing operational section of the premises. As it was external and part of the construction site, smoke alarms and heat sensors within the club did not detect the fire prior to alarm being raised. The club was evacuated as per our standard procedures, and power was isolated as a precaution. Whilst a small number of people were assessed by paramedics, none were treated for conditions as a direct result of the fire, contrary to some media reports. The fire itself remained localised and was extinguished by the fire department in a relatively short time. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated, but I can confirm that it was not electrical as there is currently no power to that section of the build.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the staff and patrons today in participating in an orderly evacuation, and the maturity and safe practice you all exhibited whilst doing so. I would also like to acknowledge the professionalism of Woollam, Barcam Electrical - Lic 66978, Queensland Fire Department, Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), Queensland Police Service, Ergon Energy Network and Premier Services Group. Everyone worked together and played their role to ensure the club was safe and able to resume operations.

⏰ Is your home ready for the 1 January 2027 smoke alarm deadline? ⏰

Queensland's smoke alarm legislation is changing, and by 1st January 2027, all homes must comply with the updated smoke alarm requirements.

This means your home should have:
✅ Photoelectric smoke alarms
✅ Alarms interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound
✅ Smoke alarms installed in every bedroom
✅ Smoke alarms in hallways connecting bedrooms and the rest of the home
✅ At least one smoke alarm on every level of the house

These changes are designed to give you and your family the earliest possible warning in the event of a fire, helping to save lives and protect your home.
