On Tuesday, we joined the Maritime Union of Australia’s rally outside CSIRO’s office in Parkville to protest the use of public science for private profit.

CSIRO is conducting research paid for and governed by the oil and gas lobby. That research is being used to argue to avoid complete decommissioning of their ageing oil and gas wells and leave on the seabed in the Gippsland Basin.

Meanwhile, CSIRO staff are losing their jobs due to federal budget cuts.

We stand for well-funded, independent, accountable public science that protects workers, communities, and the environment.
Decommissioning done properly means: Clean coast and secure union jobs.

Every tonne of steel left offshore is a tonne lost to Victoria’s manufacturing sector.

We can recycle it locally, create skilled jobs in ports and fabrication yards, and help power our renewable energy transition.

We’re calling for our science to focus on the real problems: Science that restores, rebuilds, and protects — and that creates skilled work for Victorians.
