It's like a whole new bathroom! Here are before and after photos of one of our recent bathroom makeovers.

Lots of people I’ve spoken to are keen to do one but hold off, because they think redoing a bathroom means a hundred decisions to make. Tiles, layout, fittings, the lot.

But a mini makeover isn't like that. Most of it's already decided for you. We're not moving the plumbing. The taps and the waste stay put, the tiles stay, the layout stays. All the big, hard calls are off the table before you start. That's not a limitation, it's the thing that makes it easy.

So you're not choosing from everything. You're choosing from what fits.

Start with the vanity and basin. You've got more freedom here than people think. You can go from a little wall-hung basin to a full floor vanity with drawers, as long as the new tap and waste line up with what's there. That's the biggest change in the room right there.

Then the rest falls in behind it. Tapware to match the look you want, black, chrome or nickel. Then the shower screen and toilet to tie it together.

That's it. One thing at a time, in the right order. Not a hundred choices at once.

And if it still feels like a lot, that's my job, not yours. Tell me roughly what you're after and I'll help you knock it into shape.

Give me a call and we'll sort it out together.

The best backyards aren't the flashiest. They're the ones set up so everything just works. And that part's easier than you'd think.

We've all been in a great backyard. The kind that makes it easy to spend the whole afternoon outside. Where people end up out the back for hours and nobody's running inside every five minutes for something.

Then there's the other kind. The backyard that's just there. You see it through the kitchen window, think you should really use it more, and then you don't. Another summer of it sitting empty while everyone stays inside.

Usually it's not the space that's the problem. It's that nothing out there quite works as well as it could, so it never becomes the place you actually go.

And it's rarely the expensive stuff that fixes it. Just a few small things sorted properly.

A gas line run to the barbecue, so you're not out of gas halfway through cooking for a crowd. An outdoor shower for rinsing off after the beach or the pool, which the kids will use more than anything else in the yard. A tap where you actually need one, instead of dragging a hose across the whole place. Maybe a spot plumbed in for a sink or a bar out there.

None of it's a big job on its own. But together it's the difference between a backyard you look at and a backyard you live in all summer.

And spring's the time to do it. Get it sorted now and it's ready the minute the weather turns. Give me a call and let’s chat about what your backyard might need.

I've had a lot of calls about bathroom makeovers off the back of my recent posts. Everyone seems to have decided at once that theirs has had its day, and nearly all of them want to know if they can do a quick refresh or if they have to rip it out and start again.

So do you have to spend thirty grand on a new bathroom? Here's the honest version, because it isn't the same answer for everyone.

Sometimes you genuinely do need the full reno. If the waterproofing has failed and water's getting behind the tiles or into the room below, patching over the top is money down the drain. That's a strip it back to the frame job, and thirty grand starts to make sense. I'll tell you when that's the case, because doing it cheap just means doing it twice.

But most of the time the bones are fine. The waterproofing's holding, the tiles are solid, the layout works. It's just the toilet, the shower screen, the sink and the vanity that have aged out and dragged the whole room down with them.

Swap those out and that's the whole job. Same footprint, same tiles, done in a day, and you'd swear it was a different bathroom.

It's not always easy for homeowners to know which one they have, because a tired bathroom and a failing one can look exactly the same on the surface.

Thinking about updating your bathroom? Give me a call and I'll come and have a look and tell you straight which one you've got.

Three plumbers looked at this job and said no. I said yes.

Our client wasn't chasing a whole new look. He just wanted more storage in his bathroom, and a small wall-hung basin wasn't giving him what he needed day to day.

So the plan was simple enough. Take out the little basin and put in a proper vanity with drawers. More bench, more storage, and a fresh set of tapware to finish it off.

Simple, except he'd already had three plumbers out and every one of them knocked it back. They'd happily swap the taps over, but nobody wanted to touch the vanity or anything beyond that.

It wasn't that the job couldn't be done. It's that it was a unit in a high rise, and a lot of plumbers just don't want to do it. The access, the shut offs, the extra bits that come with it. So they steer clear of the makeover and stick to the easy stuff.

That's the part worth knowing. A bathroom makeover in a unit isn't a harder job. It just needs someone who's done plenty of them and isn't put off by the building.

We put in a new vanity with proper drawer storage, updated the tapware, and plumbed it all in. Same tiles, same layout. He just ended up with the bathroom he actually wanted.

Here's what he said afterwards:

"I can't recommend Ready Plumbing enough. Nick and James installed my new vanity and upgraded the tapware. They plumbed everything perfectly, paid incredible attention to detail, and left the space spotless. 10/10."

So if you've got a bathroom job you've been told is too tricky, or you can't find anyone willing to take it on, give me a call. It's exactly the kind of work we say yes to.

A common issue we get called out for is a leak on the thin copper piping that was once installed or households. These pipes were ideal for drainage lines installed for the main water supply to your home.
The solution was to remove a section of piping and to install new.
Problem resolved.

I get one call a week to a flooded house. Same cause nearly every time, and it's a part most people didn't know they had.

It's called a flexi hose. A braided metal hose about the length of your forearm, sitting under your taps in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry. Nearly every home has them and hardly anyone thinks about them.

The problem is they don't last forever. The braid slowly rusts and weakens over the years, and when one lets go it doesn't drip politely. It bursts, and it pumps water into your home at full mains pressure until someone shuts it off.

Had a house in Davidson recently where exactly that happened. The flexi hose under an upstairs vanity had rusted right through and burst. She was home at the time and still couldn't stop it fast enough. The water ran down the hallway, through into the kitchen, and brought the ceiling down. All from a part smaller than a ruler.

Here's the good news. Flexi hoses are cheap. Replacing one before it fails costs next to nothing compared to what a burst one does to your home.

Most of them last somewhere between five and ten years, sometimes less if the water pressure's high. The signs one's on the way out are rust, bulging, fraying in the braid or any damp around the fitting. The trouble is most people have no idea how old theirs are or that they should even be looking.

That's what we're here for. Get us around and we'll check every flexi hose in the house, replace any that are past it, and you can stop wondering whether one is about to go.

When did you last inspect the hoses under your sinks?

Your pipes don't just block out of nowhere. They warn you first.

The sink starts draining a little slower. Or there's a gurgle when the water goes down. Over a few weeks it gets worse, but it's still working, so you don't think much of it.

Had a family recently living with exactly that. The kitchen sink had been slow for weeks, glugging away, and they figured they'd sort it out at some point.

At some point turned out to be 10 o'clock on a Friday night. Everything backing up, water with nowhere to go. So they're calling me out after hours, paying emergency rates for something that had been warning them for a month.

Here's what they should have done instead. If your sink's running slow or gurgling, give us a call and we'll come and clear the blockage. A lot of the time it's grease or build up near the drain and that's the end of it.

If we think it's something deeper, like a cracked pipe or tree roots further down the line, that's when our CCTV inspection comes in. We send a camera down the pipe and you see exactly what we see, so you know what you're dealing with instead of guessing.

Either way, you're not left wondering. And you're sorting it now, while it's cheap and easy, not at 10pm on a Friday when it costs you twice as much.

Is there a slow drain or gurgle you’ve been ignoring?

Your sink is probably the most touched surface in your home. And most people haven't given theirs a second thought in fifteen years.

I had a call last week from a woman who'd just seen my post about vanity replacements. She'd been thinking about updating her bathroom for a while but hadn't pulled the trigger on a full reno.

After reading it she decided to start even smaller.

When I got there she showed me three sinks. Kitchen, bathroom, laundry. All stained, scratched, and in the case of the laundry, sitting slightly loose because the seal had given up years ago.

She'd assumed replacing them was a big job. It isn't.

We replaced all three in a day. New stainless steel in the kitchen. A clean white ceramic drop-in for the bathroom. A deep laundry tub that actually fits a bucket underneath it.

She walked me out and stopped at the kitchen on the way. Just stood there looking at it. "It's so clean," she said. "Why did I wait so long?"

That's the one I hear most. Not "wow" or "amazing." Just the realisation that something they'd been putting up with for years took less than a day to fix.

If your sinks are stained, scratched, leaking, or just making your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry feel tired, it might be worth a conversation. Give me a call and I’ll walk you through the options.
