A photographic walk-through our recently completed project on Gadigal land, North Bondi.

A new two-storey home for a family of five that draws in abundant daylight through two offset courtyards north and south, responding to the need for a light-filled and airy home where young children can grow and thrive.

A big thanks to our clients and all involved in bringing the project to life.

Recently completed project on Gadigal land, North Bondi.

A new home for a family of five that transforms the challenges of an overshadowed and flood-prone site into opportunities for light, openness, and resilience.

The two-storey house draws in abundant daylight through two offset courtyards, responding to the need for a light-filled and airy home where young children can grow and thrive. The previous dwelling on the site had suffered from persistent dampness, flooding, and a lack of daylight due to the scale of neighbouring properties and the orientation of openings. The new home was conceived as its antithesis, a place of recovery and wellbeing, a living breathing home defined by generosity of light and openness to coastal sea breezes. It is also designed to become the house on the street where friends gather and play. Two living spaces on the ground floor are separated by a courtyard, providing flexible zones for concurrent entertaining. Retractable doors allow the secondary living area to function as guest accommodation when needed. A homework bench is strategically positioned adjacent to the kitchen and oriented toward the courtyard, while a home office sits directly above, creating opportunities to gaze out and rest the eyes.

The two courtyards, north and south, are staggered to form a Z-shape in plan, peeling open the footprint to draw in light and air while delineating distinct zones. A stair to the north also functions as a light scoop, which is paired with a meshed floor. The upper level contains three bedrooms and a parents’ retreat with a generous ensuite and walk-in robe. Slatted timber shutters to the west provide shade and privacy to the bedrooms while animating the facade. Floodwater storage and controlled release are facilitated through an elevated ground plane with hit and miss brickwork.

Sketch studies from our competition-winning pavilion design on Yuin Country, Merimbula. Testing different spatial configurations of briefed areas and their relationship to the qualities of site and the diverse user-groups that the building will serve.

We look forward to kicking off the project in coming weeks and working closely with Council, stakeholders and the community on continuing the design progression.
........

A multi-use pavilion to serve the existing basketball and netball court, beach-goers, board and sail riders clubs, Council lifeguards and first aid, community gatherings and not-for-profits such as Rotary.

Our design responds to the natural beauty of the site and the diverse needs of the people who come to enjoy it. We created an efficiently planned structure that sits low in the landscape, preserving valuable green space while increasing the amenity. The design playfully responds to its vibrant context through subtle form shifts in response to the existing court roof, sight-lines to the playground, skatepark and the beach access path. A rugged material pallet of hardwood, breeze-block and concrete block provides longevity while allowing the building to nestle into its coastal setting.

Casa Manyana responds to the challenges of rebuilding in bushfire-prone landscapes.

Designed for the architect’s own family, whose home narrowly survived the devastating 2019–20 NSW South Coast bushfires. However a cabin on the site was damaged and needed to be rebuilt for the growing family’s needs. The project asks how rebuilding might occur in a manner that is both resilient and affordable. It further explores how such a system might inspire and delight, while being adaptable and replicable by others facing similar circumstances.

Located within the front yard of an existing two-bedroom cottage, the curved form complements the landscape. Screened and articulated openings provide cross-ventilation, shadow-play and framed views while protecting from embers. An entry deck to the east captures canopy views and cooling sea-breezes.

Internally, the space is both generous and lofty, honest and intimate. Containing a living space, kitchenette, mezzanine with bathroom below, timber linings trace the curving forms of expressed portal frames, the logic of assembly is part of daily life.

Swipe to the end for a timelapse of frame assembly completed in one day.
