Concept design for a house renovation on Gayamaygal Land / Manly.

A red brick 1960's home on a sloping corner block has been transformed into a flexible multi-generational home for a growing young family.

The ground level is retained and modified to make it more responsive to the site, having been originally purchased from a plan and plonked on the site. A new ground floor living space to the north east-reorients the house to coastal breezes, northern light and the rear garden. This replaces the bathroom and bedroom which are relocated to the south west and upstairs respectively. An open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting room flow onto an extended western balcony. Operable fabric awnings add movement to the facade, provide relief from the western sun and give a nod to the 1960's vernacular.

A new timber clad first floor level accommodates a parent's retreat, framing western views towards Manly Dam. A fourth bedroom and a roof store are also accommodated, served by a sculptural stair that flows into the new lofty living space below.

Utilising the slope, a lower ground level is inserted to accommodate a rumpus and laundry. This provides a secondary living space as well as guest accommodation.

The existing garage is slightly extended to create a second bathroom on ground level and to form a base for a new timber-clad studio above. A window to the street activates the secondary street frontage and provides passive surveillance and articulation to a previously blank and lengthy elevation.

The house and studio volumes complement each other, sharing in common tapered timber forms and a horizontal metal roofette which runs around the perimeter of both structures, serving to mediate the transition from original red brick to new timber volumes. Celebrating expression of the original brick and reducing waste going to landfill, while adding a new contextually sensitive layer to a house with good bones.
