Winter days for DustDevil Helicopters, Pigs have spread out but are still in substantial numbers and causing plenty of damage to crops and flood out country for those that were lucky enough to get the rainfall.

It’s not always big mobs and big pigs, with very few predators every small pig is a future breeder, there’s no sport in efficient and humane eradication.

Feral pig management is all the talk at the moment in southern QLD and northern NSW and it’s easy to see why, 2 separate mobs made up nearly 100 pigs in the space of 10 minutes. The Dustdevil pilots sure know how to pull these big mobs out of the watercourse country.

Two shots may seem excessive for some of these pigs but it is important to be humane as possible.

This just came across my instagram feed and it is too important not to share. The owner of the footage gave me permission to post it, this was taken In cobar NSW and shows how agressive and predatory feral pigs can be.

I believe at this point feral pigs are our biggest single threat to bio-security, small stock and native fauna and this footage highlights it.

Looking forward to autumn coming back and mating season beginning, it’s amazing how far dogs will travel with a bit of patience and a few howls. Some heart shots animals will drop on the spot others they’ll run 20/50m, another shot from a second shooter ensured that didn’t happen.

Getting this female was something I’ve been looking forward to given her distinct markings for a while, she was running with a large pack of young dogs that were subsequently caught and she was the last of that group, unfortunately she had been in a dam prior to removing her so the mud takes away from how striking her appearance was.

This has been a very productive trap site with 4 dogs in 3 days removed from it. I refer to them as dogs as they are part of the canis genus & I dare not speculate on their sub-species, will leave that up to the experts.

Currently with what has been removed and identified on camera, the population is already 250% higher than the “natural” density of .147 per Km2 for this time of the year, with only 2 thirds of the property covered.

As part of the 2014 bio-security act, landholders are legally required to manage dogs on their lease/land.

Short filming is required to fulfil contract agreement with landholder, before humane euthanasia.
