This baby wombok is coming along nicely! A beautiful cold season crop, I can report that not only does it grow fast (time from seedling to harvest is just nine weeks), but it is also completely untouched by pests such as garden snails and rodents.
Wombok is delicious in Asian dishes from soups to stir fries and kimchi.
Happy planting!

Autumn is mushroom time! I came across this fungus earlier this morning on a suburban nature strip. This mighty guy measures about 30 cm in diameter, with a 15 cm stem.
It resembles the Phlebopus marginatus, probably the largest terrestrial fungus in Australia, however, I'm not certain. Any fungi- experts out there are invited to challenge my identification!

Check out these jerusalem artichokes in full bloom. What a stunning display of flowers!
Also known as topinambur or wild sunflower, it belongs to the sunflower family. Besides its stunning flowers which attract plenty of pollinators, it's mainly grown for the tasty tubers.
Be careful where you plant it though- the plant easily regrows from tubers left in the ground and can easily outcompete other crops.

The first globe artichoke has emerged in a herb and flower garden. Pure joy for the eye and a haven for pollinators.

A beautiful and rare native, Darwinia oxylepis, commonly known as mountain bells, in full bloom in one of our favourite gardens in the Eastern suburbs.
In the wild, this upright shrub is only found in a few national parks in south- western WA. It grows in moist gullies, but is threatened from extinction.

Take a stroll with us through a native front yard in a Melbourne Eastern suburb.
By choosing natives, you get rewarded by a stunning display of foliage and flowers, create shelter and food sources for native wildlife, and save water. This garden features a mix of shrubs left to grow naturally, and some which are pruned to shape. This adds some form and structure to the garden, while still allowing it to keep its native bushland vibe.
