🌱 VFPA Newsflash: New Forests Launches Global Landscape Opportunities Strategy

VFPA member New Forests has launched its first global natural capital strategy, allowing investment across forestry, agriculture, and complementary markets such as carbon and biodiversity.

The Global Landscape Opportunities (GLO) strategy is open to institutional investors (pension funds, insurance companies, family offices, endowments, foundations).

It will invest across a broad spectrum of natural capital assets, including sustainable forestry assets, agricultural land and food production systems, carbon and climate-related investments, and biodiversity and ecosystem markets.

Australia, United States, Canada, Europe, UK, and New Zealand will hold 60-80% of the portfolio and represent a growing investor interest in institutional-grade natural capital with long-term real returns, alongside environmental outcomes.

🌲 VFPA policy engagement across parliament

Over recent days, VFPA has continued engaging with parliamentarians from across the political spectrum ahead of the 2026 Victorian Election.

We recently met with National Party representatives Danny O'Brien (Leader of The Nationals Victoria), Emma Kealy (Shadow Minister for Agriculture) and Melina Bath (Shadow Minister for Public Land Management), as well as Cindy McLeish (Member for Eildon) and Renee Heath (Member for Eastern Victoria Region) from the Liberal Party.

Discussions focused on the future of Victoria's wood fibre industry, including regional jobs, housing, bushfire resilience, manufacturing, and the policy and regulatory settings needed to unlock future investment and industry growth.

These conversations are an important part of VFPA's election priorities focused on enhanced bushfire detection, a new 10-year Victorian Wood Fibre 'Action Plan' and related ministerial portfolio.

We look forward to continuing to work with parliamentarians from across the entire Victorian Parliament to support regional communities, attract investment and strengthen Victoria's wood fibre industry.

Minister for Agriculture Michaela Settle, alongside Tom McIntosh MP, have announced the statewide rollout of the Trees on Farm Utilisation Program.

The Trees on Farms program helps landowners realise the value of their timber resources. Previously only available to landholders in North East Victoria, the program is now available statewide.

🔦 Innovation Spotlight: ANC Forestry Group Innovative Haulage Design

The Gippsland Forestry Hub highlighted transport innovation in its Transport Infrastructure Barriers and Opportunities report released last year. One such case study of innovation was from ANC Forestry Group.

In response to the 2020 summer bushfires, southern NSW sawmills explored purchasing Gippsland sawlogs and processing them into woodchip for the paper and panelboard sectors.

In response, ANC Forestry Group developed a unique set of timber haulage trailers that were capable of transporting both sawlogs and woodchips, a new concept for industry.

This equipment has eliminated the need for two specialist trucks and replaced them with a single transport system, minimising emissions, relieving pressure on skilled drivers and saving on transport costs.

🌱 VFPA Newsflash: Data Reveals Growth of Imported Wood Products Entering Australia

Forest & Wood Products Australia released data last week showing that wood products imported into Australia have grown over the past twelve months.

The value of wood product imports for this financial year (2025-26) is projected to increase by approximately 3–4%, rising from around $2.7 billion to $2.8 billion annually, with plywood, laminated wood products (including LVL), and veneered panels remaining the largest categories to dominate imports.

🌱 VFPA Newsflash: World Environment Day

Today marks World Environment Day, a day that focuses on the significant effects of climate change and serves as a reminder of the role every sector plays in shaping a sustainable future.

Wood fibre plays an often undervalued but critical role in supporting Victoria’s goal towards Net Zero 2045 via large-scale carbon removal and storage- it absorbs and stores carbon throughout its entire lifecycle.

In fact, carbon sequestration from plantations across Victoria equals roughly 11.5 million tonnes of CO annually, equivalent to the emissions of approximately half a million homes!

The Gippsland Forestry Hub recently engaged SMEC to complete a Carbon Footprint Assessment, examining the value of forestry and timber products to climate change mitigation across the Gippsland region.

The assessment found that during the 2023/24 financial year, the Gippsland forestry industry was net negative, delivering a net balance of around -547,000 tCO₂-e.

While our industry contributes heavily to decarbonising, there is still more to do...

That's why we're increasing investment into the circular economy to better utilise forestry residues and decarbonise energy, heat, and transport and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

As we mark World Environment Day, VFPA recognises the significant contribution wood fibre already makes to climate change mitigation and the opportunities ahead to do even more.

🌱 VFPA Newsflash: New Research has Identified Learnings for Bushfire Preparedness and Management

Bushfire scientists from the CFA and FFMV, through the Safer Together program, have reconstructed 5 bushfires from the 2023-24 fire season to identify fire behaviour, modelling, suppression and overall management effectiveness.

Researchers examined fires that burned more than 28,000 hectares and interacted with areas that had undergone planned burning in the past five years.

Overall, research found that fuel management can significantly slow or moderate fire behaviour. When fire moved into areas that had been treated by planned burning, research found lower fire severity and reduced canopy scorch and char height, reducing longer-term ecological damage and supporting environmental recovery.

Experienced crews on the ground reported that treated areas made it safer and easier for firefighters to work closer to the fire edge, slow or stop the fire, and establish containment lines.

As we enter the bushfire cool-down period, it is critical to prioritise proactive management and hazard reduction strategies.

🔦 Report Spotlight: Murray Region Hub Forestry Hub Land Use Comparison

The Land Use Review and Comparison report (2025), prepared by Indufor for the Murray Region Forestry Hub compares environmental plantings (EPs) and harvestable timber plantations (TPs) across Central West NSW and the Murray Region.

The report investigates how each land use affects the economy, landowners, and the region by comparing ACCU generation, economic returns, jobs, regional economy and national trends.

Key findings in the report include:
🪴🔎 TPs support 25-45 regional jobs, where EPs support 2-5.
🪴🔎 TPs generate roughly 7–8x more jobs and economic activity per hectare.
🪴🔎 Market drives and carbon credit investors are shaping land use decisions.

Despite the social and economic benefits of TP's, in the Murray Region almost all new plantings are EPs (98%), meaning limited wood fibre jobs are being created.

The report highlights the opportunity for a mixed land use approach to promote both the benefits of TPs and EPs; optimising land use for both productive plantation expansion and biodiversity conservation and restoration.

This National Reconciliation Week, VFPA pauses to reflect on what it means to be All In.

The land on which we live and work has been home to First Nations peoples long before our industry depended on Country. That relationship with land, nature and place is something we hold with great respect.

Reconciliation is an ongoing commitment to listening and learning together. For our members and the broader wood fibre sector, that means honouring First Nations knowledge, building meaningful relationships, and recognising the custodianship that has cared for these landscapes long before us.

This week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the reconciliation journey and ask how we each can show up more fully.
