Kirby Architects Kirby Architects specialise in residential architecture, using our expertise to work with our clients to design homes for different lifestages.

We think big and never feel we are too small. Today we are all about fun and enjoying life and the spaces we habitat. We were established in the 90’s by me, Kirby Roper, with a vision to provide to a niche market for creative, innovative, and modern building design, performed with flair and imagination. Well... We listen to our clients, are innovative with the use of materials but love classical traditions, modern in the way we live/are in our daily environment. I still perform all this with flair. Life is about enjoyment when you work, with whom you work and when you walk into a space. If not you feel..sad, dreary and uninspired. We, still have a dynamic team in the office, who are passionate about GOOD architecture, construction and service. We offer a comprehensive Architectural Service to ensure our clients confidence in realising the project in an informed manner on time and in budget. We are all about giving you the information to make decisions. We are not afraid of telling it how it is.. and we love GOOD design however small or grand.

Meet Bobby and Alba, an integral part of the Kirby Architects studio. A much-loved part of our team, bringing plenty of energy, companionship and the occasional distraction.

Alba is a true golden retriever, always happy to greet clients, usually with one of her favourite toys and loves keeping you company, particularly around lunchtime!

Bobby, the border collie is a llittle more laid-back and gentle, but always keen for a walk and happy to get out and about.

Together, they bring a little extra life to the studio!

The ACA Regional Forum is back for another year, this time heading to Wodonga for a day of discussion and collaboration.

Our Director Kirby Roper and the team are looking forward to being part of this year’s program, exploring how collaboration can create new opportunities and strengthen the way practices work, sharing our experience from working with regional councils.

The event will bring together architects and industry voices from Victoria and regional NSW to share experiences, practical insights and different approaches to working with other practices, communities, government and professional associations.

We are really looking forward to being apart of this, hearing from fellow speakers and being part of the conversations around the opportunities of collaboration in practice.

The forum takes place on 2nd of October in Wodonga.

Finished photos from the Gayview Park public amenities upgrade in Wodonga.

Working within the constraints of the existing layout, our brief was to improve functionality, accessibility and the overall experience of the facilities for the local community.

Rather than treating the building as purely functional, the design uses colour, texture and considered finishes to bring character and life to the existing structure. Durable, practical and easy-to-maintain materials ensure the upgraded public amenities are designed to perform well for years to come.

Some exciting events coming up over the next few weeks...

Our Director, Kirby Roper, will be involved in two great discussions as Co-Chair of the Sustainable Architecture Forum through the Australian Institute of Architects.

On the 15th of September, Kirby will be part of a symposium exploring the relationship between sustainability and heritage. Often discussed seperately, the symposium brings these together to ask how we care for the places and resources we inherit, while considering what we leave behind for those who come next.

On september 16th, The conversation turns to Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and what they could mean for the future of the industry. Bringing together voices from engineering, research, advocacy, design and construction, the event will explore where MMC can add value, challenge some of the hype and consider how we can build differently in response to rising costs, labour shortages and quality concerns.

Two important conversations, with plenty to unpack. We’re looking forward to seeing where they go. Click the link in our bio to get a ticket now! Architecture VIC

Some before and after photos from our project at the State Hockey & Netball Centre.

It’s been great to reflect at where the project started and see how much the space has changed. A key part of the design was addressing bird nesting by introducing netting and new ceilings to prevent birds from entering while still maintaining the original design intent. The ceilings also add design element to the space, helping to change what was once a largely functional only area.

We are really proud of how this project has come together and excited to share more in the coming weeks.

Revisiting a project 25 years on is a rare and meaningful experience.

Originally designed in 2000, this home was carefully placed within a vast, exposed hillside on a vineyard in the Mornington Peninsula.
Over time, the trees and vegetation have matured, now offering shelter from the wind and gently framing long views to Western Port Bay, the Knobbies, surrounding vineyards, farmland, and the property’s lake and island. It has been so rewarding seeing how the rammed earth walls and natural timber ceilings have aged beautifully and timelessly.

Kirby Architects now have the privilege of reworking and extending the home, honouring what was always there, while shaping it for a new stage of life.

Step inside our light-filled Cressy Street project with our Director, Kirby Roper.

Kirby shares the design thinking behind the entryway, explaining how natural light has been used to shape the space. By carefully considering light, the entry creates a seamless transition between spaces, resulting in a bright, open, and welcoming experience.

Architecture isn’t always about designing something new, sometimes it’s about careful renewal of hardworking spaces communities rely on. That’s what made this mid-century amenities project with Wodonga City Council so rewarding. Through sustainable reuse we’ve helped extend the life of an existing public facility, creating a space that will continue serving the community for years to come.
