The stair-void at Home Calling. A vertical space buried deep within the floor plate along a two storey boundary wall.

A glazed ceiling with an external operable shade allows control over light, heat gain and internal mood.

Via this void, a view through the entire site from east to west connects occupants to tree canopies and a city view, as well as sharing amenity across multiple spaces.

A polite subversion to the status quo.

Par 3 house is a new home on a suburban block for a retired couple and their extended family. The project balances an acknowledgment of the volume-built context while also critically reconsidering it.

The home is comprised of three rammed earth pavilions linked together by a lower hallway and entry vestibule. The “keystone” shaped block offered up a design opportunity to address a curve in the road without being at odds with the neighbours.

The massing and arrangement of the building form adds a sense of cohesion to the streetscape, while finer-grain contemporary details and glimpses into a courtyard suggest an “otherness” beyond.
