DAYS LIKE TODAY HURT THE EGO🥹

Experience comes from making mistakes.

The difference between a good tradie and a bad one isn’t whether you make mistakes, it’s how you handle them.

I arrived on site to water pooling in the front yard. The mains pressure test was holding, which told me there was no leak showing on the system I was testing.

But the water was crystal clear, far too clean to be stormwater or sewer.

I knew where the water service ran, so I started digging.

Hole after hole, I kept finding water coming in from the higher side of the excavation, telling me the source was further up the hill.

After a handful of test holes between the meter and the house, I exposed the copper-to-poly connection right beside the meter assembly.

Still, the water was coming from further up the hill.

So I kept digging.

Eventually, I looked underneath the meter assembly…

And there it was.

A tiny leak.

The reason the pressure test never picked it up?

The leak was before the non-return valve.

🤦‍♂️

And honestly, days like today are good for you.

Because experience can be a double-edged sword.

The more years you spend doing something, the better you become at recognising patterns. You start solving problems almost automatically.

But sometimes that can become your biggest weakness.

You get locked into a way of thinking because you’ve seen the same problems a hundred times before.

Today reminded me that problem solving isn’t about proving your first instinct was right.

It’s about being willing to change your mind when the evidence tells you you’re wrong.

You never stop learning.

You never stop getting caught out.

And sometimes the best lessons are the ones that hurt the ego a little.

Find the problem. Own it. Fix it. Learn from it.

Then, if you’re lucky, avenge your misery by murdering the previous installer🤣

Then…..

Go home, take the dog for a walk, reset, and do it all again tomorrow.

Love yourself. Love your family.

Turns out old love is a s**t client. 😂

Detective Uncle BTP got to the bottom of this mystery…

She was refusing to pay the plumber’s $440 invoice because apparently, half an hour of work wasn’t worth $440.

But here’s what customers don’t see…

That $440 isn’t $440 straight into the plumber’s pocket.

There’s materials, fuel, vehicle costs, tools, insurance, licensing, registration, accounting, advertising, admin, phone bills, software, subscriptions, tax, GST, and all the other costs that come with running a legitimate plumbing business.

And before anyone says, “$440 for half an hour?!”

You’re not paying for the 30 minutes the plumber is standing in your house.

You’re paying for the 15 years it took to become the bloke who can walk in, diagnose the problem, fix it properly, carry the right tools, and stand behind the work.

You don’t pay a good tradie for the time it takes to do the job.

You pay them for knowing how to do the job right.

And I’ve got a strict NO S**T CLIENT POLICY.

If you don’t want to pay for good work, that’s completely fine.

Just don’t call me. 😂

How the f**k are we not marching on the streets?

How often do you look at your pay packet, your business account, or your tax bill and think…

“F**k. Imagine if I got to keep that money.”

Imagine what you could do with it.

Bills paid a little easier.
A better week for the family.
A bit more breathing room.
Maybe even a few dollars left over at the end of the month.

But instead, more and more gets taken, while the cost of living keeps climbing and ordinary Aussies are expected to just cop it on the chin.

And I reckon this is where our laid-back Aussie attitude has gone too far.

We’re happy to have a laugh, have a b**r, complain about the government, then get back to work on Monday and cop it all over again.

But when is enough enough?

I’m not saying I have all the answers.

I’m saying I’ve had a gutful of watching hardworking Australians get squeezed from every direction while being told to just keep tightening our belts.

When are we going to say, enough is enough?

Because if you’ve ever looked at your pay packet, your business account, or your tax bill and thought, “Imagine what I could do if I could actually keep more of what I earn,”…

I reckon we need to start having a serious conversation about it.

How much is too much?

I’ve crawled under hundreds of houses over the years… but I’ve never seen access this bad.

I got underneath, looked at the opening, and realised…

I wasn’t fitting through it.

So I did what any reasonable plumber would do.

I grabbed a broken roof tile and started digging my own tunnel just to squeeze my measly little body through. 😂

Every centimetre I crawled further under that house, every cell in my body was asking the same question…

“Why on earth did I take this job?”

Somehow, I made it through, got the job done, and lived to tell the tale.

If this doesn’t inspire me to get an office job, I don’t know what will.

I reckon I’ve earned a b**r tonight. 🍻

For a few seconds… I wanted to drive away.

Today I learnt that integrity isn’t tested when life is easy. It’s tested when you’ve got something to lose.

I woke up this morning with this strange thought: “Life’s been too easy lately. Something bad is bound to happen.”

Looking back, I realise that was a pretty self-limiting mindset.

I spent eight hours repairing one of the toughest burst pipes I’ve ever worked on. I was exhausted. As I reversed out of the driveway, I felt nothing but relief…

Until I heard the impact.

I’d reversed straight into one of the neighbour’s cars.

In an instant, my mind started doing the maths.

There goes today’s wage.

There goes the profit.

This is going to cost me.

Then came the most confronting moment…

The temptation to take the easy way out.

Nobody likes admitting that. But for a few seconds, my mind searched for the easiest option.

Instead, I stopped. I took responsibility. I found the owner and accepted the consequences.

This verse came straight to mind:

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful… when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:13

Today reminded me that character isn’t built by never facing temptation.

Character is built in the moment you choose integrity over convenience.

I’m not proud that temptation entered my mind.

But I’m grateful I didn’t let it make the decision for me.

Today cost me money.

But walking away would have cost me far more.

Your character is revealed in the moments when nobody would know the difference.

Classic Friday stitch-up. 🤦‍♂️

I swear I’ve got a target on my back. Somehow every absolute nightmare of a plumbing job manages to find me.

After crawling out of the depths of Dungeon Despair, covered in dust, sweat and bad decisions… Mrs Jones has the cheek to ask me for a bloody discount. 😂

I don’t know how it happens, but it’s like all the S**T jobs have a group chat, and they’re all sharing my number. 🤦‍♂️

So if you’ve got an absolute S**T job hiding somewhere in your house…

F**k It Friday had me questioning my life choices… 🤢😂

This job was absolutely foul.

My tools were covered in years of dried-up urine, my fingers were covered in it, my clothes smelt like it, and by the end of the day all I could smell was someone else’s p**s. It was one of those jobs where you just keep asking yourself, “How is this actually my life?”

Someone messaged me recently and asked,

“Why do you do plumbing if you hate it so much?”

The answer is simple.

I don’t hate plumbing.

I love plumbing.

I just love complaining about the filthy jobs too. This page isn’t a highlight reel pretending every day is perfect. It’s where I share the good, the bad, and the downright disgusting. If I can’t have a laugh, vent about the rough days, and share the reality of the trade, what’s the point?

The thing that put it all into perspective? This job was for an elderly couple.

None of this was their fault. They deserved the same care and respect as anyone else, so after getting covered in years of grime, I still cleaned everything to within an inch of its life before I left.

Because that’s what service looks like.

Done Once, Done Right isn’t just about fixing plumbing. It’s about leaving people’s homes better than I found them, even when the job is absolutely revolting.

Some days you install beautiful new bathrooms.

Some days you end up with poo fingers.

Some days you end up with p**s fingers.

And today… I had both. 😂

I’d still choose plumbing every single time. 💪🚿

The most technically challenging job I’ve ever had.

This one tested me.

The client had dropped a heavy item from their medicine cabinet, which shattered the existing underhung basin.

The challenge?

Retrofit a new underhung basin back into the exact same position… as a one-man operation.

Riddle me that. 🤔

When I first looked at this job, I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to pull it off.

There was no simple solution. No easy way to support the basin, get it perfectly positioned, silicone it into place, and then connect the waste without disturbing everything.

After a few days of thinking it through, the plan came together.

Some timber.
A bottle jack.
Careful preparation.
And a whole lot of patience.

The hardest part wasn’t getting the basin in place. It was getting everything perfect.

Perfectly centred.
Perfectly supported.
Perfectly finished.

Then connecting the waste into a freshly siliconed basin while making sure nothing moved even a millimetre.

This job pushed me.

It tested my patience, preparation, and problem-solving skills.

But when I stepped back and looked at the finished result…

I was genuinely proud.

10/10. I impressed myself with this one.

Anyone can look good when the job is easy.

The real test is what you do when there’s no obvious solution.

Slow down. Think it through. Find a way.

Done Once, Done Right.
