A big thank you to Wallpaper* for featuring our Casa Piva project this week.

“Craft-rich construction and immaculate detailing elevate this concept further, ensuring this project is as much about the overarching idea as it is about its everyday experience in the smallest moment.” -Ellie Stathaki, Architecture & Environment Director Wallpaper*.

Construction is nearing completion at Agnes St Residence in East Melbourne, with the final joinery and stone installation underway. Landscaping by John Patrick is now being planted in the light well between the original terrace and new addition, while the kitchen is taking shape beneath a timber grid ceiling and skylight. Lighting supplied by EST Lighting has been custom powder-coated to match the ceiling timber.

Within the original house, dark grey timber wall panelling, turned timber columns by Charles Sandford and light dusty oak arrowhead parquetry flooring introduce a contemporary interpretation of traditional detailing.

The project involves the renovation of an 1880s terrace house and a new five-storey extension on a narrow inner-city site. With the existing façade and house recognised as contributory heritage places, the interiors have been carefully detailed to reflect the building’s heritage character, while the contemporary addition accommodates family living across multiple levels.

Our Clarke Residence project in Prahran is organised around a front courtyard stepping down to a lower level, with a central courtyard cut through it. Entering to one side of the home, this is the first thing revealed, landscaping growing up from below, where the interiors open onto the terraces via the operable timber shutters.

At the rear, a terrace sits off the main living areas, with planting built to the edge of a sunken barbecue zone, set into the site to reduce the building’s visual mass towards the neighbours.

Openings in the brickwork are marked by a soldier course, breaking down the mass of the walls and expressing the junction between brick and opening. The timber is left pre-weathered and slightly irregular rather than uniform, a raw quality that sits in tonal conversation with the natural variation in the brick.

The project will be moving into construction with 04PTD12♡ in the coming weeks.

Hopetoun Residence is a four-storey concrete and timber home shaped by the needs of a multi-generational family, drawing on mid-century and Japanese modernist architecture.

Legacy homes like Hopetoun Residence often begin long before a site is acquired. When making a significant residential investment in established suburbs like Toorak, engaging an architect early can bring valuable insight to the property search itself. Our practice regularly works alongside clients to assess potential sites, considering the opportunities and constraints of each against the brief. This technical understanding can help assess a property beyond its immediate condition, considering its potential to support clients over time and realise their aspirations for the design and architecture of their home.

When a property particularly suited to redevelopment comes to market, we also collaborate with select property agents to develop preliminary schemes, giving prospective buyers greater clarity.

Whether you are considering a legacy home or representing a premium site, enquire with our team about the opportunities from the outset.

Construction is now underway on the new extension to this 1850s workers cottage in Arthur Circus, Hobart’s Battery Point, with Lawless Wagner Builders. We’re looking forward to sharing progress from site in Tasmania shortly.

The low-slung addition extends out to the boundaries of the adjoining irregular-shaped piece of land, creating a series of gardens framed by custom-made curved steel windows. The extension will transform the modest four-room heritage-listed cottage into a family home, while retaining the original building as a distinct part of the project.

Our Merewether Residence in Newcastle is heading into construction, in collaboration with MADE HOMES | Architectural Builders builders.

The house sits on one of Newcastle’s premium streets, with views out to Merewether Beach.

The site’s elevation is what gives the house its scenic coastal outlook, and the architecture responds directly to that, positioning the home to capture the view through external private yards, landscaped terraces and framed internal views.

The steeply sloping site is navigated with balconies and outdoor spaces set across multiple levels, each one making the most of the site’s fall toward the coast.

Materially, the house is built from a textural brick, travertine and a dark, rough sawn timber. Swipe through for a closer look at the site and the view it’s built around.

This project is being managed by our Byron Bay office.

As the home of architect and director Andrew Piva, Casa Piva presented a more introspective design process. The brief turned inward, considering how spaces could nourish and support his family’s rituals and ways of living.

It is an inward-looking building within its dense urban setting, taking many of its cues from the owners’ Italian heritage, reflected in its simplicity and carefully curated materials and details.

Architectural references spanning different places and periods are quietly reinterpreted, their presence deliberately subliminal and open to interpretation.

Within the Anderson Residences, the fall across the site creates opportunities for the architecture and landscape to shift through a series of levels. The roofline weaves with these changes, forming distinct but connected zones, from covered outdoor entertaining areas to pockets of private garden and larger expanses of tropical planting around the pool, developed in collaboration with Myles Baldwin.

The sense of permanence established by the oversized circular column and two-storey façade is softened by the adjoining water feature at the entry. Its stillness introduces a moment of calm, creating a measured contrast to the deliberate scale and presence experienced on arrival.

A sense of intensity builds through the material palette, with saturated terracotta brickwork balanced by the more restrained quality of raw concrete. Together, the contrast in colour and texture gives the home a distinct identity while maintaining an earthy material character.

Internally, poured concrete forms key joinery elements, set against narrow-board oak floors, cedar veneers and textural sand and clay tones throughout.

A closer look at the entry atrium of our Hawthorn Residence, where the arrival sequence opens straight onto the garden beyond.

Light pierces the space from above, drawing the eye up through the atrium and out to garden views framed at every level. The milk-coffee toned limestone that wraps the facade continues through the entry, reinforcing the sense that the building has been carved from a single mass of stone. Glimpses of the grid stone patten can be appreciated from within.

As you navigate up the staircase the large skylights flood the space through the day. Overhead, what reads as a continuation of the stone by day is instead formed from linen panels, only revealed at night when they glow evenly across the room.

Our Hawthorn Residence is a concept design currently in development in the studio.

Our Director Andrew Piva and Project Architect Jackson Caish were recently on site at our St Vincent’s Place, Albert Park, reviewing progress on the brickwork as it reaches the top of the facade.

At the rear elevation of the existing period home, smaller format Roman Bricks steps and curves upward rather than finishing on a straight parapet line, a deliberate response to the character of the home. Laid by hand, course by course, it’s a time honoured craft.

The rear extension, along with the courtyard’s boundary walls and fences, is held in the one brick throughout, elevating the feeling of the courtyard. With a reduced material palette like this, every decision about how the brick is laid matters, the bond pattern, the colour of the mortar, how each joint is struck.

Colour matching the mortar this way means the wall reads less as individual bricks and more as a soft patchwork of masonry from a distance, quieter and calmer than a more contrasting brickwork would be.
