Buying the charger is the easy part. Making sure it suits your car, switchboard and home supply is the important part. ⚡🚗

Before installation, a licensed electrician should assess:

✔ Your vehicle and charger compatibility
✔ Your home’s available electrical capacity
✔ Switchboard space and protection
✔ The cable route to the parking location
✔ Other major loads, including heating, hot water, solar and batteries

The Australian Government advises that a dedicated home EV charger must be installed by a licensed electrician and may require a switchboard or supply upgrade. That doesn’t mean every home needs an upgrade—a site assessment determines the sensible option.

Some compatible chargers offer load-management features that can balance charging against household demand. Suitability depends on the property, charger and vehicle.

Before the cabinetry, plastering or painting begins, check what is powering the renovation. ⚡

Energy Safe Victoria says the insulation around household wiring can deteriorate over time. For a home over 30 years old, it recommends considering a wiring check by a licensed electrician.

Warning signs worth acting on include:

✔ An old switchboard, particularly without a safety switch
✔ Old, cracked or broken switches and power points
✔ Recurring flickering lights
✔ Sparks from the switchboard, switches or power points

Your safety switches should also be tested every three months. If pressing TEST does not cut power to the connected circuit, contact a licensed electrician immediately.

Power boards make life easier—but they’re not unlimited power. ⚡

Fire Rescue Victoria identifies power boards, double adaptors and extension leads as common home-fire risks. A quick check can reveal problems before they escalate:

✔ One plug per outlet
✔ Never plug one power board into another
✔ Avoid double adaptors
✔ Keep boards visible and ventilated
✔ Stop using damaged, cracked or scorched equipment
✔ Use approved boards with built-in cut-off protection

Your smoke alarm can still look perfectly fine after its reliable service life has passed. 🚨

CFA says smoke alarms have a lifespan of about 10 years—including alarms connected to mains power. Check the visible label for a manufacture, use-by or replacement date.

Keep the routine simple:

✔ Test every month
✔ Gently clean or vacuum around the cover at least yearly
✔ Replace removable 9-volt batteries yearly
✔ Replace the complete alarm after about 10 years
