Ever wondered what a WaterUps wicking cell looks like after three and a half years of doing its amazing work? Have a look at this!

We’re constantly asked, “Do we have to replace the perlite in the feet of our wicking cells every year?”

Three and a half years on, with the perlite still in place, we think the photos tell the story.

Working quietly beneath the soil, the WaterUps system holds a reservoir of water, allowing moisture to wick upwards towards the roots and helping reduce the need for frequent watering.

We’re proud to be a WaterUps distributor, supplying their Oasis range of wicking beds and WaterUps systems, alongside our own Mr Fox in a Box wicking beds powered by genuine WaterUps cells.

From our Melbourne factory to greener school streets 🌿🏫

Our family team at Mr Fox in a Box manufactured and assembled these composite sleeper wicking planter boxes in our Melbourne factory for a Yarra City Council project around a school in Carlton.

These planters offer a greener, more welcoming alternative to concrete bollards. They help define the new traffic layout, with the aim of making busy school pick-up and drop-off times safer for the kids.

Built using COEN Composite Wood sleepers and our unique Mr Fox in a Box corner brackets.

Powered by the Waterups wicking system. 💧

Two weekends. Three beautiful wicking garden beds. 🌱

A few weekends ago, Michael and Laura visited our factory on a Saturday morning with a simple goal: grow organic veggies in a small space.

After a chat, they chose Mr Fox in a Box’s unique sleeper corner brackets and Waterups Wicking Kits. They bought their timber sleepers at Bunnings, where the team kindly cut them to size.

Our unique corner brackets made assembly simple, and with our instructions to guide him, Michael built the beds himself. Over two weekends, they transformed their backyard into this lovely garden, complete with three beautiful wicking beds and gravel paths. They’re thrilled with the result, and so are we!

A smaller space, with plenty of room for the joy of gardening. 🌿

When Alan and Ann downsized into a retirement village, they left a much loved garden behind. They found our Incare and Artesian planter boxes were just the right fit for the smaller outdoor space at their new home.

Twelve months later, they sent us these beautiful photos and a message that says it all:

“Gave me the garden I left behind, just on a smaller scale.”

💧 HOW DO OUR WICKING BEDS WORK?

Powered by genuine WaterUps - Wicking our World wicking cells, water is stored in a reservoir beneath the soil. Perlite fills the wicking feet and draws moisture upwards into the soil through capillary action, allowing plant roots to drink from below.

The fill pipe makes topping up easy, while the overflow sets the correct water level. Hollow composite sleepers also help insulate the soil from heat and cold.

Smarter garden beds start below the surface.

At Mr Fox in a Box, we think about more than just how a garden bed looks, we think about how it performs.

Our hollow composite timber sleepers can help reduce heat transfer through the walls of the garden bed, helping to buffer the soil from extreme outside temperatures. Pair that with the WaterUps - Wicking our World Wicking System and you create a smarter growing environment from the ground up. Water is stored beneath the soil and wicked upward as plants need it, helping maintain more consistent moisture around the root zone while reducing water loss through evaporation.

In summer, the hollow composite construction can help slow heat transfer into the soil. In cooler weather, it can help slow heat loss from the soil.
