Coles Caringbah Pavilion — CO₂ refrigeration ❄️
The store’s open. Here’s the plant room behind it.
Caringbah Pavilion runs on a transcritical CO₂ system — R744, a natural refrigerant with a GWP of 1, where the HFC blends it replaces sit in the thousands. Every refrigerated metre of the store is fed from this one room.
Our team installed and commissioned SCM Frigo transcritical racks on Bitzer compressors, high-stage and low-temp compressors on Danfoss variable speed drives, three medium temperature liquid mains, Kaplanlar and Hussmann cases throughout, coolrooms and freezer rooms back of house, and heat reclaim putting waste heat from the plant into the store’s hot water.
CO₂ runs at pressures several times a conventional system. Every joint and every metre of pipe carries it. There’s no room for a shortcut.
Congratulations to Harjeet — his first major new-build supermarket as Refrigeration Project Manager, and a serious one to have under his belt. Outstanding work 👏
And to our Refrigeration Installation team — Dan, Dylan, Ben, Jonathon and Ry. Every metre of it came off your tools.
