If your not sure if your job is classed as “essential” please contact us via messenger, phone or email.
Under the Essential Services Act 1981 (SA) an essential service means a service without which the safety, health or welfare of the community or a section of the community would be endangered or seriously prejudiced.
In the Essential Services Commission Act 2002 essential services means any of the following: (a) electricity services; (b) gas services; (c) water and sewerage services; (d) maritime services; (e) rail services; (f) any other services prescribed for the purpose of this definition.
Therefore, NECA SA/NT understands the implications of this lockdown for members to mean the following:
1. Construction work is closed for the 7 day period (minimum) including new homes, commercial projects etc.
2. All service, maintenance and repair work can continue as electricity, communications, refrigeration and air conditioning is deemed essential to the public. This type of work can continue in residential homes and also in commercial places that are able to stay open during the 7 day lockdown.
3. Infrastructure work (power, water, telecommunications) can continue to ensure everyone has access to these essential services.
4. All emergency and breakdown work can continue. This type of work can continue in residential homes and also in commercial places that are able to stay open during the 7 day lockdown.
5. Installation and connection of essential items in residential homes and commercial places that are able to stay open can continue. For example, ovens, heaters, hot water services etc.
If your work falls under the essential categories, staff will need to wear masks and adhere to all Government guidelines on physical distancing, sanitisation etc.
Members should ensure they carry their licences with them and ensure their workers carry their licence if you are undertaking any electrical, communications, refrigeration or air conditioning work over the next 7 days.
