Designing this space was an exercise in reusing materials and careful budgeting. Our lovely client decided that now her kids are older, her back garden should be converted into a tranquil space to enjoy from a number of seated positions throughout the space.
This build has been broken into manageable portions. Most of the site clearing was completed by the client and her family so our contractors could come in and complete Phase 1, the main reshaping. We introduced curved granitic sand paths and reused steppers, red bricks, volcanic rock, concrete pavers and even some old tree stumps.
We've saved some extra elements for later like a water bowl feature, the painting of the hardwood screens and paling fence, wicking beds for a small herb/veggie garden and of course, plants.
Looking forward to Phase 2.

Look at these amazing grasses being used as screening plants.
Low maintenance, beautiful movement in the breeze… magic.

Back to work this Friday!
Had a lovely 2 weeks away with the family but was silently wondering how my garden was holding up.
Quite good actually!

A small design for our client who has recently moved into this home. Two windows facing directly on to this raised bed - living room and dining area.

Client Brief: pleasing to the eye, neat, presentable, light and Japanese inspired, reuse the water feature if possible and plants that are non toxic.

Existing elements to consider: 2 existing focal points - the maple tree and water feature, large bamboo hedge in the background, north facing but surrounded by house on 3 sides, tricky uphill position through carport

Concept ideas: create layers, levels, texture and curves for the eyes to follow. Lighting to highlight features. 'Gently askew'.

Plants & Materials: Irregular slate pavers, riverstone pebbles, Scleranthus biflorus (native moss like groundcover), Dichondra repens (native ground cover), Rhapiolepis indica (small shrub), spike lights, bronze pillar light

I can't wait to see the ground covers grow to hide the edging. Necessary to keep the pebbles separated from the mounded beds but will be softer once hidden under the plants.

Even a small garden can create a big impact.
